numeral 1, and the other of which is pivot- Be it known that I, THOMAS J. BURKE, a ally movable with relation to the stationary citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Serving Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in serving devices and more particularly to a device especially intended for the delivery of pins, the movable parts of the device acting on the sheet which carlies the pins in rows, in the well known manner. lVhile this is the primary use for which the invention is intended, it will be understood that it is capable of such other applications as are commensurate with the spirit of the language of the claim appended at the end of this description.
The general type of structure represented by the present invention employs a casing containing a pair of cooperating feed rollers, between and by means of which a flexible sheet is fed through a delivery slot.
The novelty of the present invention resides in the provision, in a structure of the type stated, of a roller which is carried by a displaceable section of the casing, or its equivalent, and is spring pressed into engagement with its companion roller for purposes which will be later set forth.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a preferred and advantageous embodiment of the invention.
In the said drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of aserving device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a vertical central section thereof, the casing being open. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 6 is a plan view thereof with the parts in the positions shown in Fig. 4:. Fig. 7 is a detail vertical section showing more particularly the relation of the feed rollers and the sheet fed thereby. Fig. 8 is a detail fragmentary plan View, partly in section, of the parts shown in Fig. 7.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The casing referred to in the foregoing paragraphs is made in two sections, one of which is stationary, and is designated by the section and is designated by the numeral 2.
The section 1 has an extended base portion, as 3, which is formed as a shallow tray for the reception of small articles. In the rear of the tray, the section 1 is formed with a chamber as 1, in which the sheet of material to be delivered is located. The chamber 4 has a front wall, as 5, which separates said chamber from the tray 8 and it has also a rear wall, as 6, of slight depth, to which the section 2 is pivoted, as shown more par ticularly in Figs. 4; and 5. Springs, as 7, are associated with the pivot of the section 2 and tend to hold the latter in position to nor mally close the casing. The front wall 5 is coextensive with and is joined to the side walls 8 of the section 1. The said front wall is provided with a frame, as 9, which may be employed to hold some device of useful or ornamental character. As shown, a mirror, as 10, is fitted into the frame 9 but the latter may be equally as advantageously used as a calendar or card pocket. The said walls 8 may, for convenience, be provided with exteriorly located receptacles 11, in which matches, tooth picks, or other small articles may be placed.
The section 2 is provided with side walls, as 12, which lie within the side walls 8 and the inner edges of which are sheared at their upper ends, as at 13, to provide a clearance in order that the movement of the section 2 to closed position may not be interfered with.
The feeding mechanism comprises a pair of rollers, as 14, and 15, the shaft of the former being journaled in the walls 8 and the shaft, as 16, of the latter being journaled in the walls 12 and being extended at one end and provided with a knob or hand grip 17, by means of which the feeding mechanism is operated. The wall 8 adjacent the knob 17 is provided with a slot 18 to re ceive the extended end portion of the shaft 16.
The sections 1 and 2 are also provided with top walls, as 19, which terminate short of one another so that a slotted opening, as 20, is afforded through which the flexible sheet is delivered. The longitudinal edges of the walls 19 are sharpened so as to afford paper-tearing blades, in order that the projecting portion of the sheet may be torn away so as to leave the row of pins projecting beyond the web.
The form of the rollers ll and 13 will depend, to a great extent, on the particular use to which the device is to be put. As shown, they are of longitudinally corrugated form, but this is not obligatory.
As herein disclosed, a roll of pins is placed loosely in the chamber t and the end thereof is passed over the roller let when the section 2 is open and is held between the rollers ll and 15 when the section 2 is closed. To advance the web or sheet through the slot 20, the knob 17 is turned in the proper direction and the rollers turn in opposite directions to accomplish the object stated. The springs 7 maintain the necessary engagement of the rollers and at the same time provide for the relative yielding of the rollers, when necessary for the passage of the web or sheet, as in the present embodiment, when a row of pins is passing between the rollers.
The device is of great practical utility in that it is not limited in its application and in that it requires no adjustment or manipulation of any of the working parts, upon the insertion of a roll. All that is necessary to insert a roll, is to move the section 2 to open position. place a roll longitudinally in the chamber L4. with an end thereof over the roller 14 and release the section 2, the springs 7 moving said section to closed position and causing the roller 15 to exert a clamping pressure upon the web or sheet of the roll.
Having fully described my invention, i claim:
A device for serving paper pin-carrying sheets comprising, in combination, a section having a flat base portion, connected front, rear and side walls extending upwardly from said base portion, and a rearwardlyextending top wall, said rear wall being of less height than said front wall and being spaced from the same to produce a pocket therebetween for containing a paper of pins, of which pocket said base portion constitutes the bottom; a second section comprising a rear wall hinged to the upper edge of the first-named rear wall, side walls arranged to overlie the first-named side walls, and a top wall extending forwardly toward the firstnamed top wall, said top walls having their mntuallyndjacent longitudinal edges spaced from each other to produce a delivery opening for the sheets; a transverse shaft journaled in the side walls of each section; the shaft of one section having a projecting end portion provided with an operating knob, and the other section having one of its side walls formed with a recess to receive said projecting end port-ion when said sections are in closed position; a corrugated feeding roll mounted on each shaft, said rolls being arranged in cooperating relation; and a spring for holding said sections normally closed, with the feeding rolls bearing against each other.
