I 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARROLL L. NAsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Big Stone Gap, in the county of Wise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Envelop Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for perforating the face or front of an envelop, and is provided with means for adjusting the position of an envelop both transversely and longitudinally with respect to the perforating means.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which is simple, durable and inexpensive, and effective and efficient in operation.
For the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists of the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts generally shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the specification, but more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view on the line 41 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
This device is for the purpose of perforating an opening in an envelop by a punching actionobtained by the operation of a hand lever acting upon a spring-pressed punch.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 8 denotes generally a base portion, which is constructed in any desired or suitable manner, with which is formed integral or secured thereto, an extending comparatively thin plate 9 slightly beveled or rounded at the forward end 10, and having a perforation 11 adjacent the outer free end thereof. The outer or rounded portion 10 is also formed with a groove 12, and the sides of the plate are also provided with grooves 13, which are adapted to receive a substantially U-shaped member 14, which is adjustable longitudinally of the slots 13, and which is adapted to rest in the slot 12, in the end of the plate.
In order to adjust the position of the member 11, threaded thumb screws 15 engage and clamp the sides of the member. Mounted above the plate 9 and extending over it at a spaced distance therefrom is an arm 16. This arm maybe formed integral with the base and with the plate 9, but is preferably formed separate, and is secured thereto in any well-known manner. The forward or free extremity of the arm is provided with a hollow portion in which one end 17 of a die member 18 is disposed. The die member is pressed upwardly in the hollow portion by means of a spring 20, and at the upper end of the hollow portion a hand lever 21 is pivoted, which has a cam surface 22 adapted to engage the upper portion 17 of the die member, so that the downward movement of the hand lever will produce a corresponding movement of the die member 18 against the tension of the spring 20, which is sufficient to drive the die member 18 upwardly and to cause the upward movement of the hand lever 21 when pressure thereon is released.
In order to adjust the position of the envelop longitudinally, a slide 23 is provided, which is preferably L-shaped in form, the sides of the L extending along the front and one side of the plate 9, the plate being formed with a dove-tail groove 24 along the front end thereof in which. the slide 23 is movable. This portion of the slide is formed with a slot 25, and one or more fastening screws 26 are provided, by means of which the slide may be adjusted and held in any desired position. The side of the plate is also provided with a side recess 27, to seat the other side of the slide 23, so that the slide may be moved in a position flush with the side and ends of the plate.
In order to perforate an envelop, it is nec essary only to place the envelop over the plate 9 with the flap of the envelop inwardly, and to exert slight pressure upon the end. of the hand lever so that the die member 18 will enter the opening 11. In practice, it is usual to have the extremities of the die member 18 project slightly more than the middle portion, so that the protruding'edges will touch the paper to be punched and start the opening before the side edges contact and finish the punching or shearing process.
What I claim is:
1. A window envelop punch comprising a plate having a perforation adjacent one end thereof, an arm secured to the other end of the plate having a hollowed portion overhanging the perforation in the plate, a die member movable in the hollowed portion and cooperating with the perforation in the plate, a hand lever having a cam surface to engage the die member for moving it into cooperative position with respect to the perforation in the plate, and a spring disposed in the hollowed portion tending to press the die member out of such position and operative to return the hand lever to its operative position.
2. .A window envelop punch comprising a thin perforated plate to receive and eX- tend within the envelops, and adjustable means to position an envelop to be punched with respect to the plate.
3. A window envelop punch comprising a thin perforated plate to receive and extend within the envelops, and adjustable means to position an envelop to be punched transversely and longitudinally with respect to the opening.
4:. In a window envelop punch a perforated plate to receive the envelop thereon, and a member supported at thesides and slidable outwardly from the end of the plate within the envelop to adjust the position of an envelop with respect to the plate.
5. In a window envelop punch, a perforated plate having grooves at the sides and extremity thereof, a member adapted to be seated in said grooves and slidable longitudinally of the side grooves, and means for binding the said'member in any adjustable position.
6. In a window envelop punch, the combination with a plate perforated at one end for receiving an envelop, a member extending along the sides and across the perforated end of the plate and slidable away from the plate longitudinally of the sides thereof, and thumb screws at the sides of the plate to adjust the position of the member and to hold it in position with respect to the plate.
'7. In a window envelop punch, a perforated plate for receiving an envelop, and a member slidable laterally With respect to the plate within the envelop forv positioning an envelop longitudinally with. respect to v the opening.
8. In a window envelop punch, a perforated plate for receiving an envelop, provided with grooves in one face thereof, and a member slidable and adjustable in said grooves Within the envelop for positioning an envelop longitudinally with respect to the opening.
9. In a window envelop punch, a. perforated plate having a groove across the end and side of the perforation, and an L-shaped member slidable and adjustable in said grooves to position an envelop longitudinally with respect to the opening, the member being flush with the grooved side of the plate.
10. A. window envelop punch comprising a perforated plate for receiving an envelop, having a dove-tail groove extending from one side across the end of the plate and a recess along the side thereof, and an L- shaped adjustable member slidable in the dove-tail groove and adapted to be seated in the recess at the side of the plate so that the member is flush with the face of the plate.
11. In a window envelop punch, a perforated thin plate adapted to enter an envelop having a groove across the end thereof, a member slidable in said groove having a slot therein, and fastening devices threaded in the plate and passing through the slot of said member to bind it in any adjustable position.
12. A window envelop punch comprising a plate perforated at one end and having grooves in one face thereof between the opening and the end of the plate, means for perforating an envelop placed over the plate, a transverse adjusting device comprising a member extending along the sides and across the front of the plate, and adjustable fastening screws at the sides of the plate, and a longitudinally adjusting device comprising an L-shaped member slidable longitudinally in the said groove in the plate, and means for adjusting the position of the last said member.
