To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK Snonn, -THOMAS SHORE, and WILLIAM SHORE, subjects of the King of Great Britain and he land, the two former being residents of Rochdale and the latter of London, in the counties of Lancaster and London, respectively', England, en "neer, joiner, and manufeaturer, res ective y, have invented certain new and use lIinprovements in Sash-Fas- Y which,

This invention relates to fasteningfdevices for windows; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In carrying out this invention we secure on the inside face of one of the sash frames a, usually the top one, and at .one or both sides of the window a plate 6 having a numer of tapped holes- 0 arranged at suitable distances apart, such plate being of any suitable length. Or in place of it a number of se arate plates, tapped plugs or tubes, each aving one hole may be similarly secured. On the other sash, usually the bottom one, we mount a bolt at having at its inbolt passes through a net end a screwed portion 6 usually of an enlarged diameter, ada ted to engage-with any of the tapped holes 1n the plate or plates referred to. The intermediate portion of the tubular bracket f freely, such bracket being directly pivoted on a vertical pivot g secured to the; sash frame. The tubular bracket may be pivoted on a foundation plate It secured to the sash frame. The object of the pivoted tube, or it may be a pivoted stud with a hole in it, is to enable the screw (5 to be withdrawn from any of the tapped holes in the late I) and turned about a vertical axis to e engaged with'or disengaged from a rack or slotted plate or a plate with holes in it, hereinafter referred to. The outer end of the bolt cl has a second screwed portion a on which is mounted a milled headed collar 7' or a nut means y which it may be turned around on the bolt cl while the outer end of the latter is provided with a thumb portion 70 or cross bar by means of which it can be operated for screwing into or hereinbefore described. The rack .or slotted plate m, previously mentioned, is secured to the window frame a in close proximity to the side of the bottom sash, the slots 0 in it being open the screw bolt referred to, to be turned into or out' of each of the slots about the pivot of the tubular bracket or stud herelnbefore mentioned.
The operation of a device constructed as hereinbefore described is as follows When the screwed bolt cl is. at right angles to the sash frames, as indicated in the drawings, and is screwed into one of the tapped holes 0 in the top sash both sashes are absolutely locked together and cannot .be moved up or down. They may be thus held in their closed position, the bolt acting to this extent in -a similar manner to the old fashioned screw used for securing windowsashes. If, say, it is desired to lower the top sash it is only'necessary to unscrew the bolt from the plate 6 and pull it backward.

In either case the bottom out of'the tapped plate" end of the collar 7' bears against-the bracket f, and when the collar is screwed up against the bracket it causes the two sashes to nip the middle guide rib a of the frame, so that the sashes are prevented from rattling. If, however it is'desired to raise or lowerthe bottom sash the screwed collar is slacked back, the screw disengaged from the hole in the top sash, drawn forward and turned about the vertical pivot referred to so as to disengagethe screw and long boss of the collar from the slot 0 in the fixed bracket m.
The bottom sash cah then be raised or lowered to leave any opening required at its bottom end while the top sash is entirel closed or partially open as before describe After adjusting to t 1e position required the screw is turned about the vertical pivot into another slot of the fixed plate screwed forward into the hole in the top sashand locked by the screwed collar.
It will be understood that the aforesaid means allow of either sash being moved independently and'looked in positlon securely I V where required but that in no case can the s litab curely lockedto prevent any further movee extent and yet enable them to he sement either toward the top or bottom of the window frame; The arrangement also enables the sa'shes .to be drawn ti htly together so. as to prevent any rattling 0 the windows and. also permits of the usual window catches beingdispensed with.
I What we claim as our invention and d'esire to protect by Letters Patent is Ina sash fastener, the combination. with pivoted to the sash which is arranged next adjacent ,to the said plate and frame, a
serewthreaded socket secured to the other sash, a revoluble locking-bolt for engaging with the said screwthreaded socket, said bolt bein slidable longitudinally in the said brachet and having a screwthreaded portion, and a screwthreaded collar engaging with the said screwthifiaded portion of the bolt and movable with it pivotally into engagement' with the said slotted plate.
