This invention relates to folding gates and locks therefor.
An object of this invention is to provide a lock for a folding gate which will lock automatically upon pushing the gate towards closing position, the construction being such as to permit movement of the gate in a closing position, but preventing movement of the gate toward opening position unless the lock is opened with a key.
A further object of this invention is to provide a lock of the character described, which does not require a key to lock the same, but only for unlocking the same.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a folding gate of the character described having a lock comprising a bolt attached to an edge of the opening to be closed by the gate and which is in horizontal position when the gate is locked, but which will drop to vertical position when the gate is opened, so as not to project from said edge.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a rugged and durable folding gate and lock therefor of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, positive in operation and, withal, practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. p The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, l designates an opening, such as a window or door opening, closed by a lazy tong folding gate II. The gate ll may be of any suitable construction and comprises a pair of parallel vertical members I3 and I4 interconnected by lazy tong linkage l5. The vertical member [3 is fixed adjacent one edge 16 of the opening Ill, whereas the other vertical member H slidably moves toward and away from said edge. A roller ll may be provided at the bottom end of the member l t to facilitate opening and closing movement of the gate.
Fixed to the other edge [8 of the opening It, in any suitable manner, as for example, by screws I9, is a flat vertical plate 20. Fixed to the plate 20 are a pair of ears 2! forming therebetween a slot 22. A transverse pin 23 fixed to the ears 2| crosses said slot. Pivoted on the pin 23 is a bolt 2a. The bolt has at one end, a reduced portion 25 received within said slot 22 and is formed with a longitudinal slot 26 through which the pin 23 passes, for the purpose hereinafter appearing. lhe main portion 28 of the bolt is screwthreaded, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Normally when the gate is not locked, the bolt 28 hangs in a vertical position, as shown in the dot dash lines of Fig. 4. When the bolt is used to lock the gate, in the manner to be explained hereinafter, the same is raised to horizontal position.
Fixed to the member I l, is a lock 30 adapted to cooperate with the bolt 24. Said lock comprises a plate 3! having at the top a downwardly rolled horizontal tubular portion a. Said tubular portion am is formed with an opening 32 in an edge thereof for the purpose hereinafter appearing. Attached to the plate 3i is a channelshaped member 33 having outwardly extending flanges 3t contacting the side portions of said plate, and a wall 35 parallel to said plate. The member 33 covers the opening 32 in the tubular portion 3la and forms a housing for the lock. Said tubular portion serves to close one end of chamber 33a formed by the channel-shaped member 33. The other end of said chamber is closed by an end plate 31 having flanges 38 received within said channel-shaped member and welded thereto.
The lock 30 is fixed'to member 14 by means of a strap 40 riveted to one flange 34 and plate M as by rivets 4i; and riveted to the member I4 as by rivets 42.
Pivoted to the plate 31 and disposed within the lock chamber 33a, is a pawl having a pointed portion 46 projecting through the opening 32 in tube 3m and engaging the threads of the bolt 24. A coil compression spring 4? interposed between one end of the pawl 45 and the tubular portion 3m serves to normally press the point 46 against the threads of the bolt.

Mounted on the plate 3! is a key cylinder 5!) controlling an arm 5! within-the lock housing or chamber adapted to rotate the pawl in a direction for releasing the point from the bolt. It will be'noted that the pawl is so arranged with respect to the bolt, that the gate may be moved to closing position. Movement of the gate in the opposite direction isprevented, however, 'due to the engagement of thepoint of the pawl with the threads of the bolt. As the gate is moved toward closing position, the point will merely snap over the threads, but will prevent movement of The pawl may be disengaged from the bolt by inserting a key into the cylinder 59 and rotating the arm 51 in a direction for releasing the pawl. During such movement the pointed portion 46 will cause axial movement of thebolt with respect tothe pin 23, such movement being permitted by the slot 26. r
When the gate is opened, the bolt will drop bygravity to the vertical dot dash position of Fig. 4. It will now be understood that a key is not required to lock the gate. Furthermore, the more the gate is shaken, the tighter it willclose and'remain closed as the gate can only move toward closing position until the lock is unlocked with a key.
It will be understood that my improved lock and bolt may be applied to folding gates of a construction other than that shown in thedrawing. Thus the lock may be applied to a folding gate made of two sections attached to opposite sides of a door; or window opening and movable toward each other for attachment at the middle.

- It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this inventionare achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination, a support, a bolt having a sliding pivoted connection with said sup-port, a

2. A look comprising a plate having one end thereof rolled to form a tubular portion open at both ends, said tubular portion being formed with an intermediate opening, a channel-shaped member on said plate having outwardly extending flanges contacting the plate, and a wall parallel to said plate and forming with said plate a chamber closed at one end by said tubular portion, means for closing the other end of said chamber, a pawl pivoted to said plate and disposed within said chamber and having a pointed portion projecting through said intermediate opening, resilient means for urging said point into said opening, and key actuated means for rotating the pawl against said resilient means to move said point out of said opening.
3. A look comprising a plate having one end thereof rolled to form a tubular portion open at both ends, said tubular portion being formed with an intermediate opening, a channel-shaped member, on said plate having outwardly extending flanges contacting the plate, and a wall parallel to said plate and formin with said plate a chamber closed at one end by said tubular portion, means for closing the other end of said chamber, a pawl pivoted to said plate and disposed within said chamber and having a pointed portion projecting through said intermediate opening, resilient means for urging said point into said opening, and key actuated means for rotating the pawl against said resilient means to move said point out of said opening, and a bolt having a serrated portion passing through said tubular portion, the pointed portion of said pawl being adapted to engage the serrations of said bolt.
4. In combination, a member having a pivot pin, a bolt having one end thereof formed with a longitudinal slot receiving said pin, said bolt being screw-threaded, a lock having a horizontal tubular portion adapted to receive said bolt, a pawl pivoted within said lock, said tubular portion having an opening, said pawl having a pointed portion extending through said opening and engaging the threads of said bolt, a spring normally urging the pointed portion of said pawl into engagement with said bolt, a key cylinder on said lock, an arm on said key cylinder adapted to engage said pawl for rotating the same in such direction that the point thereof moves out of engagement with respect to said bolt.
5. In combination, a screw-threaded bolt, having a serrated portion, a lock comprising a plate having an end thereof rolled into tubular shape to form a tubular portion, a channel-shaped member having outwardly extending vertical side flanges contacting said plate, the upper end of said chan nel-shaped member being closed by said tubular portion, means for closing the lower end of said channel-shaped member, said tubular portion having an intermediate opening, a pawl pivoted to said plate and disposed within said channelshaped member and having a pointed portion projecting through saidopening, said boltbeing adapted to be received within said tubular portion and engaged by the point of said pawl, a coil compression spring interposed between one end of said pawl and said tubular portion and urging the pointed portion of said pawl into engagement with said bolt, a key cylinder on said plate and having an arm adapted to engage said pawl for rotating the same, said pawl being so arranged as said pawl is moved out of engagement with said bolt, by said arm.

A look comprising a plate, a tubular portion on said plate and parallel thereto, said tubular portion being formed with an opening intermediate the ends thereof and adjacent said plate, a casing on said plate and forming a chamber therewith, one end of said chamber being closed by said tubular portion, a pawl pivoted on said plate and disposed within said chamber and having a pointed portion projecting through said intermediate opening, resilient means for urging said point into said opening, key actuated means for rotating said pawl against said resilient means to move said point out of said opening, a bolt having a serrated portion within said tubular portion, the pointed portion of said pawl being adapted to engage the serrations of said bolt.

A lock of the character described comprising a plate having one edge rolled into a tube and formed with a cut-away portion, a pawl pivoted in said lock and having a point projecting through said cut-away portion, and a bolt slidably extending through said tube and having serrations engaged by said point of said pawl, a key cylinder on said lock, and an arm on said cylinder adapted to engage said pawl.

In combination with the lock having a tubular portion, a bolt having a screw threaded portion extending through said tubular portion, said tubular portion having an opening, a pawl pivoted within said lock and having a pointed portion projecting through said opening and engaging the threads of said bolt, spring means for retaining said point in engagement with said threads, a key cylinder on said lock, an arm on said key cylinder, adapted to engage said pawl for rotating the same to bring the point thereof out of engagement with respect to said threads.

In combination with the lock having a tubular portion, a bolt having a screw threaded portion extending through said tubular portion, said tubular portion having an opening, a pawl pivoted within said lock and having a pointed portion projecting through said opening and engaging the threads of said bolt, spring means for retaining said point in engagement with said threads, a key cylinder on said lock, an arm on said key cylinder adapted to engage said pawl for rotating the same to bring the point thereof out of engagement with respect to said threads.

In combination, a support, a serrated bolt pivoted at one end thereof to said support and adapted to hang by gravity in vertical position, a lock movable toward and away from said support, and provided with a horizontal socket adapted to receive said bolt, upon lifting said bolt to horizontal position, a pawl within said lock, resilient means for maintaining said pawl in engagement with the serrations of said bolt, key actuated means for moving said pawl out of engagement with said bolt, to permit said lock to move away from said support, said bolt being adapted to drop down about its pivot to vertical hanging position upon moving said look away from said support.
11. In combination, a support, a bolt having a pivoted connection to said support and being adapted to normally hang in vertical position by gravity, a lock movable toward and away from said support and having a portion adapted to receive said bolt upon lifting the bolt to horizontal position, and releasable means within said lock for locking said bolt within said portion, said bolt being adapted to freely drop to vertical hanging position upon releasing said locking means and moving said look away from said support.
12. In combination, a vertical member, a bolt having a pivoted connection at one end thereof to said member about a horizontal axis, and being normally disposed in a vertical position alongside said vertical member, a second member movable toward and away from said first member, and adapted to receive said bolt, upon moving said bolt to horizontal position and moving said second member toward said first member, means to prevent Withdrawal of said bolt from said second member, and means for releasing said bolt to permit said second member to move away from said first member, said bolt being adapted to move to normal vertical position upon moving said second member away from said first member.
