UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SCHMIDT, OF ELIZABETH, INE'W JERSEY.
CLOCK-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Sol-mum,- a citizen of the United States, and resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Clock-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in clock holders, and the object of the invention is to provide a clock holder of this general character of a simple and comparatively inexpensive nature, and of a strong and durable construction whereby a clock preferably of the well known alarm clock type will be conveniently held with only its dial face exposed, the face plate of the holder being of an ornamental nature to present a pleasing effect to the eye, the holder being so constructed that when not in use it may be collapsed to be readily stored away within a minimum of space.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, and combinations and arrangement of the several parts of the improved clock holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In order that my improvements may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a clock holder constructed according to my invention, a clock being illustrated in position; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a clock holder constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of Fig. 2 with the clock omitted; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, with the clock omitted, the position of certain of the parts when folded or collapsed being indicated by dotted lines; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary central transverse section illustrating certain details.
In these views, 1 represents the face plate of the clock holder constructed in accordance with my invention, having produced on its outer or exposed face 2, certain ornamentation, whereby a pleasing effect is presented to the eye, the shape or contour Specification of Letters Patent.

of the face plate being of any ordinary or preferred design. Approximately centrally of the face plate 1, is produced an opening 3 to which is adapted to be presented for eX- posure, the dial face of the clock t. hile this clock ma be of any structure, it is particularly intended to be of the well known alarm clock type.
The clock 4 is held to the opening 3 by the table 5, herein shown of a rectangular form adapted to extend longitudinally of the rear of the face plate beneath the opening 3. This table 5 is held in its operative position by the end supports 6, which are hinged to the rear face of the face plate by the flexible strips 7, whereby said end supports are movable from an operative position to a folded position as shown in Fig.
2, and indicated by dotted lines in Fig.
The lower edges of the supports 6 are arranged in a longitudinal plane flush with the lower edge of the face plate 1, while the upper edges 8 thereof are inclined inwardly and downwardly'toward the face plate 1, so that an inclination will be given to the table 5, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5. This inclination of the table is for the purpose of giving a tilt to the clock 4-, when in position, to cause said clock by its own weight to bear snugly against the rear surface of the face plate 1, as is thought to be obvious.
The table 5 is hinged along one end by the flexible strip 9, to one of the supports 6, and is capable of movement upwardly, is shown in Fig. 2, whereby the clock holder as an entirety may be collapsed or folded to permit when not in use its storage in a minimum of space.
When the holder is assembled for use, it is necessary that the parts be held in such position. While any means may be employed, it has been found preferable to have project from the free end of the table 5, the 1 fingers or buttons 10, which are adapted to be accommodated and gripped by the spring jaws 11, on a second of the end supports 6 or the support free of the table 5. While these jaws 11 may be positioned on the upper edge of the support proper, ithas been found of advantage to employ the reinforce strip 12, as shown in Figs. 2, and 3 for a purpose which is obvious. It has also been found of advantage to produce along the inner longitudinal edge of the table 5, the reinforce strip 13 of such thickness as to have its upper face in the same longitudinal plane with the lowermost point of the opening 3, as shown in Fig. 5, and produced in this reinforce 13 are the pockets or cavities 14c in which the legs 15 of the clock are accommoduted to assure a proper positioning of the clock dial with relation to the opening 3.
The improved clock holder constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is therefore particularly well adapted for use and it will also be obvious from the above description that the improved clock holder is susceptible of considerable modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason, I do not desire to be understood, as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of the several parts of the device, herein set forth, in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a face plate having an opening, supports hinged to the face plate capable of movement toward or from such face plate, a table resting on such supports beneath the opening of the face plate, said table being hinged to one of the supports and having locking engagement with the remainder of such supports.
2. A device of the character described comprising a face plate having an opening, supports hinged to the face plate and disposed vertically thereof, the lower edges of such supports being flush with the lower edge of the face plate and the upper edges of such supports being in a plane beneath the lowermost plane of the opening in the face plate and a table hinged to the upper edge of one of the supports and capable of locking engagement with the remainder of the supports, said table being disposed beneath the opening of the face plate and adapted to support a time piece to expose the dial thereof at the opening in the face plate.
3. A device of the character described comprising a face plate having an opening, supports hinged to the face plate disposed vertically thereof, the lower edges of such supports being flush with the lower edges of the face plate, the upper edges of the supports being inclined to aid the face plate and terminating in a plane beneath the plane of the opening, in the face plate and a table carried by one of the supports relatively movable therewith and capable of locking engagement with the remainder of the supports.
4. A device of the character described comprising a face plate having an opening, supports hinged to the face plate disposed vertically thereof, the lower edges of such supports being flush with the lower edges of the face plate, the upper edges of the supports being inclined toward the face plate and terminating in a plane beneath the plane of the opening in the face plate and a table carried by one of the supports relatively movable therewith and capable of locking engagement with the remainder of the supports, and capable of relative movement therewith in a path at right angles to the path of movement of the support-s.
In witness whereof Ihave hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
