Description

J. M. STAMPS. COMBINED STRAIN PLATE'A NDJGUY SUPPORT. APPLIOATIOH IILED un. 1, 1910.
986,238. Patented Mar. 7, 1911..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. STAMPS, F SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED STRAIN-PLATE AND GUY-SUPPORT.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns M. STAMPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Strain-Plates and Guy-Supports, of
which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means to prevent the cutting or scarring of poles by guy wires, also to provide means to support guy wires; and with these objects in view my invention consists of the parts and combination of parts as will be hereinafter pointed out.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a pole or standard broken away, with my invention attached; Fig. 2 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a combined strain plate and guy wire support detached; Fig. l is an end elevation of the same; Fig. 5 is a plan view of an integral blank from which the combined strain plate and wire support is formed; Fig. 6 is an end view of the blank; and Figs. 7 and 8 are front and end elevations respectively of the clip formed independently of the strain plate.
1 represents a pole, standard, etc.; 2 is a guy wire, and 3 is a wire which may be an electrical conductor for trolley rollers, telegraph, etc.
4; is a plate constructed from flexible ma terial, preferably metal, which is adapted to be bent or wrapped around the pole 1 and secured thereto by means of nails, bolts or screws passing through the openings 5. At each end of the plate 4 are clips or supports 6, which terminate in cylindrical bases 7 adapted to receive a rope or other guy above which is a contracted throat 8 formed by the bend 9 in the metal.
10 is a lip or ear projecting from one edge of the cylindrical bases 7, the object of which is to present a rounded surface to the guy to prevent chafing or cutting of the guy, as will be understood by those skilled in the art.
The upper end of the clip or support (3- is provided with an opening 11 corresponding with the opening 19 in the plate 4, whereby the clip may be securely fastened against the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 1, 1910.
Patented Mar. 7. 1911.
Serial No. 546,706.
plate 4 by means of a bolt, screw or nail, thereby securely closing the clip above the guy.
As shown in Fig. 5, the combined strain plate and clips are formed from a single piece of material, preferably metal. It may be stamped or otherwise formed. In forming this blank, it will be noticed that the metal is sheared or otherwise removed from between the tongues 10 and the lower edge of the plate 4.
In the process of forming the combined strain plate and guy support, after the blank has been cut, the clips 6 are bent to form the cylindrical base and are then crimped to form thecontracted throat- 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 41-; The cars 10 are then bent downwardly and are concave on their upper face so as to present an unbroken bearing surface beyond the edge of the cylindrical base, whereby chafing or cutting of the guy is prevented.
By the use of this invention, guy wires cannot out into or slip down on the poles. The strain plate 4i. is placed on the pole facing the direction in which the guy pulls and is held on the pole firmly by two wraps of the guy wire around it, the guy wire passing through the left-hand loop and thence twice around the pole and thence through the right-hand loop and firmly clamped to the guy wire. This combined plate and support not only presents a neat appearance, but prevents .lackening of the guy by reason of the fact that the guy is held a ainst slipping down on the pole.
In work where the strain is light, the clips shown in Figs. 7 and 8 may be used independent of the strain plate.
As will be seen from the above, the strain of the guy is made to support the down haul.
What I claim is 1. A blank for a combined strain plate and guy support stamped from sheet metal and consisting of a main body, straps extending from one edge of said body at the ends of the body, and ears extending inwardly from said straps near the juncture of the straps and body.
2. In a combined strain plate and guy support, the combination with a main body,
of clips formed integral therewith at its ends and substantially parallel therewith.
3. In a combined strain plate and guy support. the combination with a main body, of clips formed integral with the ends of the body and ears integral with and depending from the bottom of the clips.
it. A guy support comprising a single piece of metal rebent at its ends to form a cylindrical base, and two arms, and a depending ear extending from one edge of the bottom of said base.
The foregolng specification signed at Sac- N ramento, niliforma this lttll day of February, 1910.
JAMES M. STAMPS.
