UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE".
GEORGE LOWRIE WILEY, OF BROOKLYN, EW ronrnassrenoa To THE STANDARD UNDERGROUND CABLE COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PA.
CABLE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION fanning part of Letters Patent No. 355,493, dated January 4, 1887.
Application filed June 19, 1886. SerialNo. 205,614. (No model.)
T 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1,.GEORGE LOWRIE WILEY,
residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Oable-Hangers, of which improvements the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure l is a view in end elevation of my improved hanger or support for aerial cables, the hanger being closed orlocked. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the hanger being shown open ready for application. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of a portion of an aerial cable and its suspending-wire connected by the hanger.
The invention herein relates to certain improvements in hangers for aerial cables; and it consists in providing a hanger provided with suitable hooks for the reception of the suspending-wire and cable, said hooks being simultaneously closed and locked, the lock being so constructed and arranged that the weight of the cable will prevent any opening of the hanger.
The hanger is formed of astrip of metal, preferably elastic or spring, said strip being bent or curled at one end to form a hook, 2, for the reception of the suspendingwire 7. The end of that portion. of the strip forming the hook 2 is bent outwardly and upwardly, forming a hooked lip, 3, as shown. A hook, 4, somewhat larger than the hook 2, is formed at the other end of the hanger by bending or curling thestrip, as shown. The end of the hook 4 is bent so as to project upwardly, as
shown at 5, and at the end of this bent portion is formed a downwardlyprojecting hooked lip, 6, adapted to engage the hooked lip 3 on the hook 2.
The strip is so bent in forming the hanger that the portion 5 of the lower hook will normally stand out from the hooked lip 3, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to permit of the placing of the hook 2 over the suspending-wire 7 and theinsertion of the cable 8 into the hook4, asshown in Fig. After the hanger has been applied to the suspending-wire and cable, as above stated, the portion 5 of the lower hook is forced inwardly and upwardly, and the lip 6 is caused to engage the lip 3, thereby securely inclosing the suspending-wire and cable within the hanger.
It will be observed that after the hangerhas been applied and locked the weight of the cable will tend to hold the engaging lips 2 and 5 more securely together.
In order to protect the cable as against injury from the sharp edges of the hanger at the sides ofthe hook 4, said edges are flared outwardly, thereby forming a rounding bearing for the cableat such points.
I am aware that it is old to use a cablehanger made in one piece, having a long slotted tongue and two shorter tongues at one end and a short tongue at its opposite end, the long tongue being adapted to surronnd'thesuspending-wire and to be locked to the opposite end by the'short tongue engaging the slot therein, the cable being held in the loop formed by the body portion of the'hanger.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. In a hanger for cables, the combination of the hooks 2 and 4. for the reception of the suspending-wire and cable, the point of the hook 4. standing normally away from/the point of the hook 2, and lips 3 and 6, constructed to engage each other and to be held in such engagement by the Weight-of the cable, substantially as set forth.
2. In a hanger for cables, the combination of.
the hooks 2 and 4, for the reception of the sus pending-wire and cable, the hook at being formed with flaring edges, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE LOWVRIE WVILEY. Witnesses:
