, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. M. SMAIL, OF ROSEWOOD, OHIO.
' mama.
WIRE-FENCE ras'rmmn.
To all whom. it may concern: v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. SMAIL, citizen of .the United States, residing at Rosewood, in the county of Champaign and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates tofences and has particular reference to a device to be applied to the posts of the same for the purpose of supporting wire thereon.
The invention has for another. object an improved fence wire fastening device for securing the fence wire to a post so'that the fence wire is permitted to move longitudi-' the provision of a fastener of this character which is of such formation that the same is adaptable to posts of various constructions and formations and which will securely re-' of a stress upon the wire.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to'the following do scription and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of a wire fence having the improved fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved fastener. F ig.: 3 is a horizontal section through a modified form of the fastener applied to a T-post, and, Fig. 4 is a' perspective view of the same. Y Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference character.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a post which is disclosed as be-' of the post 10, to provide a socket therefor,
against the outer side of the to loosely receive the outer end 0 a to bind t band 23 againstthe outer face of the post. A lip or holder 25 extends upwardly and Specification of Letters latent. Patented Oct. 25, 1910. Applicationfiled Tune 7, 1909. Serial No.
and which is overlapped at its ends as at 1'8 and 19, the overlapped portions engagl'ng post. T-he overlapped extremity 18 of the band 17 is provided with a threaded aperture 1nt er-. mediately of the edges thereof, through which is en aged a 'set screw 20 extending inwardly through an enlarged aperture formed in the overlapping portion 19 and for engagement against the side of the post 10. Atthe lower edge of the band 17, and upon the overlapping end 19, a lip or hook 21, is positioned which is curvedoutwardly and upwardly for engagementv with a fence wire 16 to retain the same upon the post 10.
The u per extremity of the lip 21 isbent inwardly toward the band 17 and is flared outwardly at its upper extremity to form a cam face to direct the wire into the lower end of the hook. The lip 21 is a ertured the set screw 20, bymeans of'which the wire 16 is held in position. In this form of the fastener, when it is desired to secure the device upon the post 10 the band 17 is engaged out the post and the set screw 14 is moved inwardly to eng'a against one side of the post and to bin the socket or holder 17 against the opposite side of the post 17 The set screw 20 also serves to retain the overlapping portions 18 and 19 in position and to close the upper end of the hook. It will also be noted that in this construction the setv screw 20 is en aged through the aperture formed in the 11p 21 and that the set screw serves as a pinabout which the extremity of the wire 16 may be secured when the improved fastener is positioned at the end of' vbent int-o U-form to provide a hook, and
which carries a set screw 24 in one arm thereof. 'The set screw 24 is disposedin threaded engagement through the arm and engages against the rear face of the post 22 e outer or opposite arm of the outwardlyfrom the outer arm of the band 23 and is curved inwardly toward its upper end and flared outwardly at its extremity to provide a cam face or guide fordirecting wire into the holder.
is claimed as new is:-
Having thus described the invention what 1. In combination with a fence post having a Wire supported thereon, of a band engaged about. said post and having its ends overlapped, a resilient lip" formed at one side u on said band at the lower edge thereof'an wire, and a set-screw engaged through said lip and the overlapped ends of said band for engagement against said post to retain the band in positlon.
2. A fence wire fastener including a strip extended upwardly-Ito engage said 'in presence of two witnesses.
of metal bent into U -Shape to loosely engage about a fence'post and having a resilient lip upwardly extended from one end thereof to receive a strand of wire, and a set-screw carried in the opposite end of the strip for engagement with the post to bind the strip thereagainst.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature WILLIAM F. M. SMAIL. [L.S.] WVitnessesr EPHRAIM BUROKER, (1F. HOUSEMAN.
