BASIN-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 31, 1910.
Patented Mar. *7, 1911.
Serial No. 541,190.
T 0 all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WOOD, of Noblesville, county of Hamilton, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Basinrench; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a practical basin wrench adapted for operating on nuts, pipes and the like that are behind other parts and therefore inaccessible for the ordinary wrench.
The chief feature of this invention consists in forming the aw portion thereof separate from the handle and removable, attaching the handle to the jaw portion at a right angle thereto, or at a right angle to the usual position of a wrench handle. To
that end I removably attach the handle to one of the jaws, and means are provided in connection with the jaws for moving them toward and away from each other.
The nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrench assembled. Fig. 2 is a central horizontal section through the jaw portion of the wrench.
In detail 10 represents one jaw and 11 the other jaw of the wrench, and 12 the handle. The stationary aw 10 has a tubular member 13 pivoted to it by the pin 20 that extends through a series of cars 21 from the inner end of said tubular member, the opening therethrough being preferably angular and adapted to receive the shank 1.4 of the movable jaw 11. The shank 1 1 and jaw 11 are provided with an internally threaded hole 15 therethrough to receive the screw bolt 16, which has a shank portion 17 in the outer end of said extension 13, and an outer knurled finger piece 18 for turning said screw bolt. The portion 17 thereof has an annular recess into which screws 19 project through the extension 13. These screws permit the rotary movement of the screw bolt but prevent the longitudinal movement thereof. In this way the jaw 11 is adjusted in position toward or away from the stationary jaw 10.
The stationary jaw 10 has an elongated hole 25 extending through it transversely or widthwise into which the reduced end of the handle 12 is insertible.
In operation, the jaw portion of the wrench is put in place and tightened up against the nut or other thing to be turned, and then the handle is inserted, and by turning the handle the wrench will be operated.
The device is particularly serviceable to plumbers in installing basins and the like.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A basin wrench including a pair of jaws, shanks on said jaws mounted adjustably with relation to each other, one of the jaws being provided with a hole through it which extends in a line at a right angle to a plane through the two jaws and shank, and a handle with one end insertible in said hole, substantially as shown.
2. A basin wrench including a aw, a handle removably connected with said jaw and extending laterally therefrom, a tubular member mounted in connection with said jaw, a movable jaw with a shank extending into said tubular member and with an in ternally threaded hole therein, and a screw bolt rotatably mounted in said tubular member and operating in the hole in the shank of the movable jaw.
3. A basin wrench including a jaw, a tubular member pivotally connected with said jaw and extending at a right angle therefrom normally, a handle removably connected with said jaw and extending laterally therefrom, a movable jaw with a shank extending into said tubular member. and means for adjustably moving said shank in said tubular member, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
JAMES 00D. lVitnesses J. E. OWEN,
JOHN N. FISHER.
