LAMP-SHADE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM PERSON and ALFRED C. ABRAMSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shades, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to construct a shade for lamps comprising a base, a top, and ribs connecting the base and top which form glass spaces between them.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of a shade containing our improvements, and in which a portion of the cap is broken away. Fig. 2 is an underface representation in which a portion of the fringe cleat is broken away. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on dotted line a a Fig. 1. The base 1 in this instance is hexagonal in outline, and has an upwardly extending ledge 2 forming a rest for a glass section. The top 3 is of the same outline as the base and has a depending ledge 4 forming a rest for the glass section. The base and top are connected by ogee ribs, one located at each angle thereof, and each composed of two halves 5, secured together, each half formed with a rabbet 6 to receive a glass section. Screws 7 connect the ends of the ribs with the base 1, and screws 8 connect the other ends of these ribs with the top 3. A cap 9 is connected to the top 3 in any suitable manner.

To the base 1 is connected an apron 11, by the screws 12, and to the lower edge of the apron is secured a fringe 10 by the cleat 13, held in place by the nails 14.

The glass sections 15 are seated in the rabbets 6 of the ribs and against the ledges 2 of the base 1, and the ledges 4 of the top 3, and strips 17 curved to conform to the inner edges of the ribs, are secured to the ribs by the screws 18.

I-Ieretofore lamp shades have been constructed, each side in a frame or panel, the

frames or panels secured together to form the complete shade, by our construction no frames or panels are used,-as the base 1 and top 3 are complete within themselves, and the ribs of ogee form connect the base and top. While the ribs are shown and described as made in two halves, it is intended to so unite the halves that they will be as one piece.

lVe claim as our invention.

1. In a lamp shade, a base having a substantially horizontal top face, a top having a substantially horizontal under face, and ribs connecting the top and base and having substantially ogee curves that bring the upper and lower ends into substantially vertical relation, said ends being abutted respectively against the horizontal faces of the base and top and secured thereto.

2. In a lamp shade, a base having an upstanding fiange, a top having a depending flange, ribs connecting the base and top and having grooves in their opposite sides, and glass located between the ribs, base and top, and having margins located behind the ribs and in the grooves.

In a lamp shade,'a base and a top, and ribs connecting the same, each rib consisting of sections located side by side and having opposite rabbets in their inner portions, and a retaining strip secured to the inner sides of the sections and bridging the joint between them, said strip projecting over the rabbets and forming glass receiving grooves.

4. In a lamp shade, a top, a base, ribs connecting the top and base, an apron suspended from the base, upwardly extending fasteners passing through the base into the ribs to secure the same together, and downwardly extending fasteners passingthrough the base into the apron to secure said base and apron together.

5. In a lamp shade, a polygonal base having a horizontal upper face, a polygonal top having a substantially horizontal under face, independent ribs interposed between the base and top and formed into ogee curves that bring their end portions into vertical relation, said end portions abutting against the horizontal faces of the base and top, set our hands in presence of tWo subscribing fasteners passlng through sald base and top \vltnesses.
