Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented BT31. *2, 1911.
Application filed. December 10, 1910. Serial No. 596,719.
T 0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, LYMAN S. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkport, in the county of Clayton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Slip-Share, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to slip shares for plows and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a share adapted to slip in its position at the lower end of a mold board means being provided at the back of the mold board and upon the said share for drawing the same into its proper position. hen the share is properly positioned at the lower edge of the mold board it is braced against all. of the strains to which it is subjected during the operation of plowing.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is an under perspective view of a plow showing the share in position at the lower edge of the mold board. 2 is an inner side elevation of the mold board and share. F 3 is a perspective view of a back plate which is applied to the share. Fig. 1 is a detailed view of the forward portion of a land side bar which forms part of the plow frog. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the mold board and share cut on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a transverse sec tional view of part of the mold board, share and land side bar out on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is aperspective view of a plate which is applied to the rear side of the mold board.
As is usual in plow structures, the mold board 1 is supported upon the rear end of a beam 2 and the said beam in turn is connected with the land side bar 3 which constit-utes a portion of the frog of the plow. A plate t is secured to the rear side of the mold board 1 and projects below the lower edge thereof. The said plate 4 is provided at its lower portion with a series of notches 5, the side edges of which converge toward each other and the upper portion of the said plate. The plate a is curved or concaved substantially in conformity with the curvature of the mold board 1.
The land side bar 8 is provided at its forward end with a slot 6, the forward end of which is open at the forward end of the said land side bar. The share 7 is provided at its land side end with the usual gunnel 8 and a strut 9 is riveted at one end to the gunnel 8 and at its other end to the end portion of the share 7. The said strut is received within the slot (3 and at its rear edge bears against the end wall of the same. The plate 41 is provided at its forward end with a flange 10 which is attached to the inner side of the land side bar 3. A plate 11 is secured to the inner side of the share 7 and projects above the upper edge thereof. The plate 11 is provided at its upper edge with projections 12 which are snugly received within the recesses 5 of the plate 4-. A yoke 18 is fixed to the rear side of the plate 11 and the shank of a keeper 1% is pivotally connected with the upper portion of the said yoke 18. A bracket 15 is fixed to the rear side of the mold board 1 and is provided with notched arms .16. The keeper 14 is received between the said arms 16 and a wedge 17 is driven or otherwise passed through the keeper 1 1 and is located in the notches of the arms 16.
From the above description it will be seen that when the share is seated at the lower edge of the mold board 1, it is slipped edgewise so that the strut 9 is passed into the slot 6 of the land side bar 3 and the projections 12 are passed into the recesses 5 and bear at their edges against the edges of the said recesses. At the same time the keeper 14 is slipped in the space between the brackets 16 and the wedge 17 is driven through the said keeper 1% and located in the notches of the arms 16 as, above indicated. Thus the share is securely held in position against all strains to which it is subjected during the operation of plowing. When it is desired to remove the share, the wedge 17 is withdrawn from the keeper 14 when the share 7 may be moved in an edgewise direction away from the lower edge of the mold board 1 and away from the forward edge of the land side bar 3. By reason of the fact that the keeper 11 is pivotally connected with the yoke 13, sufiicient flexibility between the said parts is'prohandling the share when it is being sharpened or when it is being heated in a forge.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a plow comprising a mold board and a land side bar slotted at its forward end, a share provided upon its under side between its intermediate portion and its gunnel with a strut adapted to enter the slot in the land side bar, a recess plate attached to the rear side of the mold board, a plate attached to the rear side of the share and having projections adapted to fit snugly within the recesses of said first mentioned plate, and a securing device for holding the share in position at the edge of the mold board.
2. In a plow comprising a mold board and a land side bar, a plate attached to the rear side of the mold board and projecting below the lower edge thereof and having at its lower portion notches, the side edges of which converge toward each other at the upper portion of the plate, a share, a plate mounted upon the rear side of the share and having projections which protrude above the upper edge of the share and which are snugly received by the recesses in the plate at the back of the mold board, a keeper connected with the plate upon the rear side of the share, a bracket for receiving the keeper and mounted upon the rear side of the mold board, and means for securing the keeper in said bracket.
3. A plow comprising a mold board and a land side bar, a plate attached to the rear side of the mold board and projecting below the lower edge thereof and provided at its lower portion with recesses, a share, a plate attached to the rear side of the share and having projections which protrude above the upper edge of the share and which are snugly received by the recesses in the plate at the back of the mold board, a yoke attached to the plate carried by the share, a keeper pivotally connected with the yoke, a bracket mounted upon the rear side of the mold board and adapted to receive the keeper, and means for securing the keeper in position in the bracket.
4:. In a plow provided with a mold board and a land side bar, a plate attached to the rear side of the mold board and projecting below the lower edge thereof and provided at its lower portion with recesses, a share, a plate attached to the rear side of the share and having at its upper portion projections which are snugly received within the recesses provided in the plate upon the mold board, a yoke attached to the plate and mounted upon the share, a keeper pivotally connected with said yoke, a bracket mounted upon the mold board and having notched arms which receive between them the said keeper, and a wedge passing transversely through the keeper and lodged in the notches provided in the arms of the bracket.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
