JAMES ADAMS! or NEWARK, DELAWARE.
Letters Patent No; 98,538, dated Januaryd, 1870.
. mrnovnmmv'r m CARRIAGE-CURTAIN FASTENING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making past of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES Apams, of Newark, in the county of New Castle, and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening for Carriage-Curtains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description thereof, suflicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, refcrencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure'l is a front view of the device, illustrating my invention.
Figure 2 is at'ransverse section in the linear 1,.fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention is a novel device for fastening carriagecurtains, and consists in bars, which are arranged transversely across slots of the curtain, so as to be caught on hooks, which are screwed in the proper part of the carn'age. In order to render" the same more efi'eetive, I arrange springs within the slots, whereby the cross-bars are pressed firmly against the. heads of the screw-hooks, andv held in place.
In the drawings- A may represent a portion of the frame or body of a vehicle, and A, a portion of the curtains thereof, both of whichare of ordinary form and construction.
In the curtains, I formv slots, 'a a, and across each slot there is arranged a cross-bar, f.
F represents a screw-hook, which is secured to the body or framed the vehicle, so that its head or hook shall extend at right angles to the crossbar f.
Pieces of rubber, O, or other suitable elastic material, are secured to the curtain, and so arranged that they shall projectdnto the slots at a, and extend therein to a point near the cross-bars f.
In the present case I reinforce the edges of the slots by metallic plates, B C, which shall clamp together the curtain round about the 'slots, and likewise the cross-bars, and, one end of the rubber pieces, G.
For this purpose, one of the plates may have teeth, I) b, which will pierce through the curtain, and be bent over the other plate, or both plates may have teeth, which shall be bent down over each other. Said plates may, however, be secured together in other modes, for instance, by riveting or stitching.-
It will be-seen that the operationof buttoning and unbuttoning thecurtains is easily performed. In the former case the cross-bars will readily slip over the hook, and be firmly retained thereby. They cannot be removed without at first pushing them back, so as to clear the heads of the hooks, and. then elevating them therefrom.- The springs G prevent accidental displacement or unbuttoning of the cross-bars, their tendency being to press the latter against the head of the screw-hook.
I thus produce a simple, cheap, and. effective substitute for the ordinary button and button-hole.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg r 1-. For the purpose. of a fastener for curtains, the cross-bar a and screw-hook F, combined and operating together, substantially as described.
2. The spring G, in combination with the cross-bar and a hook, to operate together, substantially as described.
To the above I have signed my name, this 23d day of November, 1869.
JAMES ADAMS.
