WIRE GARMENT-STAY.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Wire Garment-Stay, ofwhich the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved article of manufacture in which round spring wire may be bent in flat alternate loops, to produce a flexible garment stay, of the thickness of one diameter of wire only, and having straight line parallel edges; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a stay which may be flexed in all directions yet be thinner and less cumbersome than when bends of wire are superposed to attain such result; second, to afford ventilation by means of open loops formed of thin spring wire, composing the stay; third, to facilitate the insertion of the stays into the pockets in the garment for their reception, by reason of the straight line parallel sides of the stay affording a smooth guidance thereto. I attain these objects by the improved stay illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Figure 1, is a plan of a preferable form of my invention, formed of single wire only. Fig. 2, is a plan of an alternate form thereof made of single wire, and Fig. 3, is a plan of a double wire stay.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In Fig. 1, the wire a is formed into oppositely disposed triangular loops; it being bent so as to cross obliquely as at b to form the sides of the triangle, and in straight line as at 0 to form the base of the triangle, so that the alternate arrangement thereof will make straight line edges to the complete stay, without crossing or superposing the wire, to produce a stay flexible in all directions of even width, having the thickness of one diameter of wire only.

Grecian border, in oppositely arranged loops, it being bent so as to cross as at b, and in straight line as at o to form the base of the loop, so that the alternate arrangement thereof will make straight line edges thereto, without crossing or superposing the wire, to produce a flexible stay of even width having the thickness of one diameter of wire only.

InFig. 8, two wires or and a are used, which wires are bent in loops, together, to a hexagonal form; the bases 0 of each half hexagon being arranged oppositely, in straight parallel lines each hexagonal loop being joined to each succeeding loop by a twist (Z in the wires a a, to produce a flexible stay of uniform width and having straight parallel edges.

In all the foregoing examples of my invention the most important features attained are lightness and thinness of the stay, fiexibility in all directions, uniform width and straight parallel edges thereto, for the purposes as aforesaid; and I wish it to be understood, that while the designs illustrated may be preferable, the same results may be attained, by the use of wire, formed into other designs, without departing from my invention.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A corset or dress stay consisting of a single elastic wire formed into a series of substantially closed tandem loops, with the exposed side edges of said loops in alinement.

2. A corset or dress stay consisting of a 7 single elastic wire bent into a series of substantially closed and alined tandem trian gular loops.

3. A corset or dress stay consisting of a single elastic wire formed into a series of substantially closed and alined tandem loops all lying in the same plane.
