This invention relates to improvements in fan attachments for rocking chairs, cradles, and the like. i

Une ohject of"thefinvcntionc is the provision of a device actuated by the rocking inoi ien'ient ot the chair or cradle to which it applied to direct a current of air onto the head of the occupant of the chair or cradle.

Another object is the provision of a device which may be readily applied to most forms of rim-hing chairs or cradles now in use with out necessitating any expensive alterations in the structure of the chair or cradle.

\Vith the above and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in -certain novel details of construction and arrange inent of parts, hereinafter fully described,

With this construction it will be seen that the fan shaft is extensible, and may be adjusted to various distances from the seat 8. The outer or upper 5 end of the shaft 22 is provided with a trans verse opening which receives the shanks 2 1 and 25 of a pair of fan blades 26 and 27, the said shanks extending in opposite directions and being secured against displacement by means of set screws 28, extending through the upper end portion of the shaft 22.

By reference now to the drawings it will be seen that keyed or'otherwise secured to the lower end portion of the shaft 20 is abeveled pinion 29 and pivoted adjacent to the upper end portion of the side 10 of the bracket is a toothed segment 30, the teeth of which mesh with the pinion-29. The segment 30 is provided with akradial shank 31,

the function of which will presently appear.

An oscillating arm is designated by the numeral 32, the said. arm being somewhat greater in length than the length of .the longer side 9 of the bracket and havingfits 25, medial portion. pivoted to the bracket, as

shown at 33, said arm being arranged over the inner face of the bracket its pivotal point being at the point of juncture of the sides 9 and 10, or approximately so. Se

cured to one end of the oscillating arm is an angular-shaped hanger 33, the said hanger extending downwardly from the arm and i thence toward the opposite end thereof and supporting a roller 34. The opposite end of the oscillating arm 32 is provided with an eye 35, and connecting the said eye with the seat 8 of the chair is a helical retractile spring 36, the function of which is to yieldingly hold the roller 34 in engagement with the floor or other supportingsurface for the rocken Extending upwardly from the arm 32 and at a point adjacent the hanger 33 is an upright 37, the said upright being considerably less in length than the length of the arm 32 and connection between the upper end of the upright 37 and the radial arm 31 of the toothed segment 30 is established by means of a pitman 38, the opposite ends of which are pivoted to the upright and arm 31.

With this construction it will be manifest when the chair is rocked the arm 32 will be oscillated relatively to the, rocker 7, whereupon the pitman and toothed segment will be likewise oscillated and turning movement imparted to the sections of the fan shaft. It will be seen that during each complete oscillation of the rocker 7 turning movement in opposite directions will be imparted to the fan blades 26 and 27 so that a current of air will be directed onto the occupant of the chair or cradle to which the device is applied.

From the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts-and these so arranged that the danger of'derangement will be reduced to a minimum.

A fan attachment for rocking chairs and the like comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to the rocker, a lateral socketed extension arranged on one face of the bracket, anoscillating arm arranged on one face of the bracket, a roller arranged on one end of the arm, a spring member serving to hold the roller in engagement with the ground and connected at one end to the op posite end of oscillating arm and adapted to be connected at its opposite end to the rocking chair, a rotatable fan shaft con-' nected to the rocking chair and having at one end thereof a plurality of fan blades, and having its opposite end arranged in the socket of the extension, and a connection between the fan shaft and. oscillating arm, for I the purpose described. 7

A fan attachment for rocking chairs and the like comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to the rocker, a lateral socketed extension arranged on one face of the bracket, an oscillating arm arranged on the opposite face of the bracket, a roller arranged on one end of the arm, a spring member serving to hold the rollerin engagement with the ground and connected at one end to the opposite end of the oscillating arm and having its opposite end adapted to be secured to the rocking chair, a rotatable fan shaft connected to the chair and having at its upper end a plurality of fan blades, and having its lower end arranged in the socket of the said extension, a pinion arranged at the lower end portion of the fan shaft, an oscillating member carried by the bracket and meshing with the pinion,

and pitmen connecting the gear member with the oscillating arm. 7
