FRANK OLSON, OF \VAUSA, NEBRASKA.
ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4,1916.
Application filed November 23, 1914. Serial No. 873,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVausa, in the county of Knox and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for chairs, and has for its principal object to provide a chair attachment which materially increases the comfort of the article.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will hold the back of the chair in Various adjusted positions to enable the user to recline or sit straight at his desire.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which effectively forms a stop for the back to prevent the same from going past a predetermined limit.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side view of a. chair showing this attachment as it would appear when applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the attachment, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a chair provided with the usual bottom 2, arms 3, and hinged back 4. This back a is hingedly secured to the bottom as at 5 and is designed to permit the user apertureis spaced slightly inwardly from the terminal of the body and the extension 12 is designed to project partially into the.
opening through the coil spring. A suitable notch 18 is formed in the body 11 on its under side, and this notch is inclined upwardly and rearwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A similar notch 14 is formed at a point slightly in the rear of the notch 13 and this notch forms the tongue 15 which extends downwardly as at 16 and forms a stop to prevent the device from passing a predetermined limit. It will be noted that the walls of the notches 13 and 14 are inclined rearwardly and the bottom walls thereof are inclined upwardly toward the forward end of the device, and it will thus be seen that the back of the chair will be prevented from becoming accidentally displaced after the same has been adjusted to the desired position.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the hooked end S of the spring is con nected as at 17 to the arms 3 of the chair while the walls of the notches 13 and 14 are arranged to engage the pin 18 carried by the chair back. After the user has adjusted the back to the desired position it will be apparent that he may lean back against the back of'the chair and due to the fact that the spring 7 is interposed between the back and the arms, it will be evident that the back will give slightly thus making a much more comfortable reclining chair which may be adjusted to different positions.
WVhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a chair having an of the contractile type located in rear of the arm rest and having one end secured to the arm rest and having its opposite end extending in the direction of the-back and terminally formed to provide a hook, a plate located in rear of the spring and having an opening for the reception of the hook on the adjacent end of the spring, and extensions formed on the forward end of the arm rest and a reclining back, a coil spring plate and extending into the interior of the In testimony whereof I affix my signature spring, a pin carried byfthe chair back, the in presence of two Witnesses.
said plate having one 0. its side ed es 31 0- r vided With notches for interolmnge bly en- FRANK OLSON gaging the pin on the chair back, and a deitnesses:
