J. RAU.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROGKING mums.
No. 393.342. Patented Nov. 20, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT Erica.
JOHN RAU, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO A. F. KLOTZBAOH, OF SAME PLACE.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING=CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,342, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed March 31, 1887. Serial No. 233,120.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Fan Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fan attachments for rockingchairs and other moving articles, in which a fan is made to swing horizontally in a segment of a circle, while its vertical support swings laterally, and the objects of my improvement are to operate said fan and support in a simple manner, by means of a crank and levers united by universal joints and a standard pivoted to the rocker of a chair and provided with arms to keep it in proper position indepeudently of ropes and' pulleys. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a rocking-chair having a fan attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side View of the central portion of one of the rockers, showing the plate carrying the lower pivot orjournal of the attachment. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of said rocker, its plate and journal. Fig. 5 is a top View of the lower bearing and bushing to receive the vertical fan-rod. Fig. 6 is a top view of said bushing. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section below the plane of the chair-seat.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In said drawings, A represents one of the chairrockers, to the inner side of which is attached the plate B, having projecting from its fiat side a pin, 1), forming thejournal fora standard, E, the lower end of which is provided with a horizontal arm or brace, O, on the ends of which are mounted the rollers 0", preferably of rubber, one of which always rests on the floor when the chair is rocked. The pivot-pin b carries a thumb-nut, D, so that the standard can be easily removed from the chair when the fan attachment is to be removed therefrom. The standard E and its lower arm, 0, can be formed in one piece,
(No model.)
if desired. The upper end of the standard is bent horizontally and extends toward the cen ter of the space under the chair-seat, and said upper end is reduced in diameter to form a journal for a journal-box, F, that is retained thereon by a thumb-nut, G. The box F has a short arm or pivot-pin projecting from the top and bottom thereof, that is received in perforations in the ends of the branches h of a fork on one end of the connecting rod H, so
that the latter can have a front and back motion, besides a certain amount of rotary motion permitted by the box F. The rear end of the connecting rod H has forked ends If, perforated to receive a pin projecting from the top and bottom of the journal-box I, carried upon the reduced or-journaled end of the rod K, and said box is retained upon its journal by a thumb-nut, J, mounted upon its screwthreaded end. The opposite end of the rod K passes diametrically through a sleeve L, and is retained at any desired point of its length by a thumb-nut, M. This adj ustability of the rod K in the sleeve L permits the latter to receive more or less oscillatory rotary motion, as may be desired to be given to the fan over the occupant of the chair. The sleeve L receives in its upper end the lower end of the vertical rod O,that is secured thereto by a screw, W, passing through one side of saidsleeveand havingitsendimpingingagainst the rod 0. The lower portion of said rod passes through ajournal-bearing, P, and is of reduced diameter to form a shoulder resting on said journal and supporting said rod. Said bearing and its cylindrical side lugs are received into the box N, secured to the rear end of the chair-seat. To retain the rod 0 verticall y its upper portion passes through a guideloop, Q, secured to the rear of the upper rail, S, of the back of the chair, and above said loop there is adjustably secured, by means of a thumb-screw, T, an arm, R, the outer end of which carries the fan V, having a socket embracing said arm,and a thumb-nut, \V, entering the side of said socket secures it to said arm.
The length of the horizontal portion of the arm It is generally equal to half the width of the seat, so that when in motion the fan will not project beyond the sides of said seat and at its upper end an arm, It, provided with a not interfere with persons passing alongside fan, and a horizontal red at the other end adthereof. justably united thereto and to the connecting- Having now i all y described my invention, I rod, substantially as and for the purpose de- I 5 5 claim scribed.
