BOX-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Vatented Feb. 141-, 1911.
Application filed May 20, 1910. Serial No. 562,543.
To (MZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JonN (l. Wam, citizen of the United States7 residing at lishee` in the county of Cochise and Territory olf iitrizona, have invented certain new and uset'ul mprovements in Box-(lovers, oi which the Jfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles, having particular reference to an improved cover or top adaptable particularly to spire and powder cans.
The invention has Jfor an ohjeet to form a top of this character from a single sheet ol metal7 which is so lient as to earijv a slide adapted to regulatie the opening and closing et the can` The invention eomprehends an improved cover which is provided with spaced guides and retaining lugs, which are integrally 'termed thereon for the reception ot' a slide. and which carries a spring to normally and vieldaliily hold the slide in a closed position.
For a 'full understanding ot' the invention reference is to he had to the Following description and areompanying drawing` in which:
vliligure 1 is a perspective view o't` a can having the improved cover applied thereto. Fig. Q is a .fragmentary transverse and eentral section taken vertically through the can. showing the slide in its normally closed position,- Fig. 3 is a similar view. slmwing the slide in an open position. Fig. l is a 'fragmeiitary longitudinal and central section taken vertically through the ran.
(loi-responding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all 'the views oft the drawing hy the sa me reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numerals 1() and 11 designate the 'front and the hack of a can which is provided with the sides 12 and 13. The improved cover which is position-ed upon the top ot the can comprises a single sheet of metal 141i. which is transversely crimped to form a pair ot' spaced ridges or guides 15 and 16 arranged midway between the ends o't' the cover or sheet of metal .111. The guides or ridges 15 and 16 are provided. adjacent Atheir opposite ends, with intnrned ears 17 which are struck 'from 'the ridges. The ears 17 are spaced upwardly trom the cover 1li to accommodate a slide 18 which is snugly engaged thercheneath and between the guides 15 and 16. The slide 1S comprises a sheet o't metal i which is ot a length somewhat shorter than the width o't' tAhe cover 11, and which is pro vided aeross its outer edge with an upstanding flange 1f). 'lhe inner end o'ti the slide 18 is provided with a lip .20 which is turned upwardly to form a stop :for engagement at its opposite ends against the adjacentears 1T. The cover 11i provided at its opposite ends with flanges 21 and 22 to seat against the inner faces o't the ends 12 and 121 of the ran, the 'flanges being soldered or otherwise secured pern'ninently to the can. The inner side oit' the cover 1'1- is provided with an upstianding flange Q21 to fitl against the inner face of the haek 11 ot' the can. The outside of the cover llt carries a depending flange 2-1- to fit over and againsty the outer 'tace o't the 'Front wall 10. The meeting ends of the flanges 2Q and '23 are enlarged and turned over to Vt'orm a head 25 to receive a spring 21'. 'lhe spring Q11 is lformed -from a length ot' suitable wire` or the like` which is arched at its outer end, as at. 277 to pass over the inner extremity ot the guide 16, the latter determining the outer end oi the head 25. 'lhe lree end o'l" the spring Q13 is looped` as at QS. to 'torni an abutmentto engage against. the outer 'faee o'tE the lip 20. The spring QG is enrved outwardly o't the art-hed portion 2T to press against the lip Q0 to hold the slide 18 normally in an outward position. The outer ears 17 iorm stops to engage with the flange 19 when the slide is moved inwardly to register the opening Q1) o'f the slith` with the opening 30 formed in the central portion ot the cover 111-.
In the use ot' thecan the same is inverted and the slide 1S is moved inwardly between the guides 15 and 16 and beneath the ears 1 7 against the tension o'l the spring QG. The flange 19 strikes against the outer ears 17 and holds the slide to register the openings Q9 and 30. The contents of the can are now permitted to tall through the registered openings. To close the cover the operator releases the flange 1E). when thc spring 9.6 presses against the lip Q0 and moves the slide 1S outwardly until the lip 20 strikes the inner lugs 17. Vhen in this position the openings 29 and 30 are held ont of registration with one another, and the passage through the cover is thns closed.
A can which is thus constructed can loe economically manufactured, and does not increase materially the proportions of the can,
so that a practical and e'Hicient device is produced for normally closing the can, and by means ot which the can may be quickly opened to discharge in small quantities the contents thereof.
The openings 29 and 30 may be of any desired number to discharge the contents of the box in various quantities.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: l,
l. A receptacle including a hollow body, a top formed on the body and having an opening centrally therethrough, spaced guides carried upon the top, intiiined ears carried by the guides and adjacent their ends, a slide arranged between the guides and between the ears and having an opening therethrough for registration with the opening in the cover when the slide is moved inwardly, a flange extending upwardly from the outer end of the slide to operate the saine, an upturned lip formed upon the inner ond of the slide, said slide and said lip adapted ttor engagement with the said inturned ears to limitI the movement ot' the slide, and a spring carried by the cover and engaging at its free end against said lip to normally hold said slide in an outward position.
2. A closure including a sheet of metal having a central opening therethrough and being transversely crimped to form spaced ridges, said sheet of metal. having inturned ears struck from the ridges and flanges about its edges, a slide formed of a metallic plate arranged beneath the ears and between the guides and having a flange upturned against said ears to limit the movement of y the slide, said slide having an opening formed therethrough lior registration with the opening in the cent-ral portion of the sheet olf metal when the slide is moved inwardly, and a spiine carried by said sheet of metal for engagement against said lip to normally hold the slide in an outward position.
3. fr closure for a receptacle including a top for the receptacle having openings 'formed centrally therethrough and being crimped to provide spaced guides extending iipwr rdly across the saine, the guides having ears extending inwardly therefrom adjacent their ends and in spaced relation from the top, a slide mounted upon the top between the guides Yfor reciprocation beneath said ears, the slide having upturned portions at its ends to limit the movement of the slide by contact with the ears, said slide also lr ving openings toi'ined therethrough for registration at times with the openings through said top, and a spring carried by the top and engaging one end of the slide to hold the same in an extended position and retain the openings out of registration.
ln testimony whereof, l aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
