Letters Patent No. 98,424, dated December 28, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASKET-MACHINE.
^ The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same..
tion, and represent the means used in carrying out my invention- Figure 1 being a top view of a table and frame used in attaching the ribs or standards to the bottom of the basket;
Figure 2, a View, by Vertical section, of the same; Figure 3, a View, by vertical section, of a former, with a basket thereon; andv Figure 4, a view of a socket, for the bottom ot the basket.
In each oi' these figures, where like parts are shown, like .marks and letters are used' to indicatethe parts.
My invention is intended for use inthe manufacture of baskets from strips of wood, and having wooden bottoms, and has special reference to the.
means for the adjusting and attaching of the ribs or standards to the bottom of the basket. The socket a is so attached to the table b, by a screw, c, or othersuitable derice,.that it vmay be turned thereon.
rlhe inner po1tion,'d,`of this socket, is sunken or depressed, for receiving the under side of the bottom e of the basket. 4 y
lThe bottom has a grooved edge, as shown by fig. 3 of the drawings, into which the lower ends of the ribs or standards x of the basket are vproperly secured. Pins, f, are affixed in the socket, for guiding and'- holding the strips at's'uitable distance apart, so that they shall be ip the proper position and relation to each other for being formed and worked' into the. basket.
A screw-rod, g, passing through an arm, h, whichY is connected to an upright, t', serves to clamp the bottom of the basket in the socket, and thus the-(ribs and bottom are prepared for-'the finishing of the basket by pressing the horizontal strips j between and overand under the ribs x, and for the main band k, as is commonly practised, the former l being at such stagest in the making of the basket as may be necessary.
The manner 'of attaching the socket to the table gives great facilities'for turning and manipulating the bottom and ribs, and A also for allowing a change of socket for larger or smaller bottoms, for baskets of different sizes, and if a series of holes be made in .the socket, the pins could be readily transferred, so as to adapt them to ribs of different widths, the spaces' between the pins being wider or narrower, as required. What I' claim as my invention of the means herein named for making wood-bottom baskets, is-
'lhe pins or guides f, in combination with the screwrod g and socket a, as herein set forth.
This specification signed, this 19th day of August,
' MERVILLE SHAFFER.
