3 Letters Patent No. 105,421, dated July 19, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN. MITER-B OX.
The Schedule referred to `in these Letters Patent and making part of thensame To allfwhom it4 'nia- 1j concern: l
Be it known um I, noem@ ranma, or lutins-r field, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Miterdvox;` and I donereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the aocompanying drawing, in .which- .Figure 1 is' atopviewbr plan of 'my improved lniter-box; t l Figure 2 is a sdeelevation ot the same; and
` Figures 3,A 4, `ando are detail views of some of the parts.
. `The saine'. letter indicates the same. part wherever "itoccul-S.- l
rLhe nature of `this invention consists in the peculiar .constluction` of a ruiter-box, admitting of a variety t `of convenient adjustments, and lcombining devices for t guidingthe saw, holding and guiding the lumber, de-
terminiugthe lines and angles of section, and adjusting the supports to the angles of the various Vsurfaces `of the lumber to be operated on, all 'as hereinafter more particularly set forth.`
V'lo enable others to make and use my improved` lunter-box, I will` proceed to describe its construction and operation."
fr 4".lheiiame, which is semicircular in outline,1s formed in two `symlnetrical parts, A A', which'are The upper edge of the frame formstthe graduating arcs K K.. The radii. of @these arcs intersectat `the center. of the circular `piece F Ff, with reference to which the angles are laid oii, which are measured onthe graduated arcs.
t 'Between the two segments A A'ofthe'frarne, andV on aline with the center of"` the circle li F,.a re placed the adjustable saw-guides D D' and G The guides G G" have the form represented in g. 6, and are made to slide back` and forth, as may be required, in recesses I, in the innerfacesof` the-frame. `'lhey are iixed in position by tightening the nut n, on 'the end of bolt t, which `bolt passes through a slot, fr, in the lower t `part of the guide. f
The guides D D"are .attached to yslidesrE, .which f move back and forthinrecesses in the faces of the t frame.` lhese slides have curved grooves ormortises in their4 innerfaces', which receive curved ribs p, projecting fromthe sidesof the lower portion of `guides D D', and permit a radialmotiou to said guides,` so
" that they 'cangbe thrown out of the perpendicular position to any extent requiredfby the work, as, forexf ample, to the position shown in iig. 2. t
The slides .E are xedin any -desiredposi-tion by tightening the nut W, on theend of bolt b1, said bolt passing throughslots s, in the frame, and through 4slotsin the slides E. i i
The saw-guides are lined with wood, andthe bed H J, against` which thesaw descends, is formed of wood. The remaining portions of themiteribox' I design forming of metal.
-t of `the semieircular portion of the fran'ie.
Tables )B B`l rest upon the top of the box, their inner edges supported upon the shoulder m of the cir? cle F F', and their outer edges upon the upper edge of the semicircularfarc of the frame. The form and construction of these tables are shown in jigs. 1,- 3, and
4, fig. 1 being a top view, iig. 3 a rear elevation, 'and tig. 4 an end view.-
To the bottom of the table-B B' are, attached lugs lc c', -c c', ,which receive between them the lower ends of arnis a a, which have curved ribs upon them,
L working in grooves in the inner facesof said lugs.
' lhe arms a have the supports C attached to them, and can he set at any desired angle with the table B, and fixed at suchangle by the-set-screws e c'.
The cleat d, attached to the side of lug c, fig. 3,
forms, with the end of' table B, a recess to receive the edge of the circle E F', the end oi' table B being cut ,to a circular arc, to correspond with the edgeof the y circle, and rest-ing upon theV shoulder m., while the cleat d passes underV the bottom ot' the circle F F.
'.lhc outer side of the table B works upon the iiauge an'ge is received between the lug c and the triangular ril) It, fig. 3, both cnt to anarc corresponding with that of the flange t, so that the table can traverse readily uponV it.` i
' A set-screw, g, in the lower end ot" the long arm.
f of lug c enables the. table to be iixed in any desired position `on the frame.
The angle of section can be fixe/Lin advance, bythe the positionk of the tables relatively to the scales on the frame. A similar scale may be used ou the arms a a to regulate the'augle between the table B and the support G.
The operation obvious iiom its construction.
modification in the character of the work it is required to perform. z
Having thus fullydescribed my invention,
What .I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent described, and for the purpose specied. v
.2. The saw-guides D D', constructed as described,
and having both vertical and horizontal adjustment-s, 5
as set forth and shown. i
The above specilication of my said invention signed and witnessed at Mansfield, this 17th day of March, A. D. 1870.
, Y. H. N. BURR.
Witnesses;
C. G. CLARK, WM. SHERMAN.
This
or mode of using the miterbox is It embraces every adjustment needed to adapt it with accuracy to every 1. The table B, traversing on thegraduated arc K and the circular piece F F, and having the adj ustable` 'supports C connected to it, in t he manner shown and
