- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, I911.
Application filed December 2, 1907. Serial No. 404,661.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY C. GAUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Type, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to printing type and especially to Italic or similar slanting type.
Prominent objects of the invention are to provide a simple and practical form of type especially of the Italic variety; to avoid having an overhang on either side of the type by reason of its slanting or Italic character, and to accomplish the above and other desirable results in a simple and expeditious manner.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view of several type embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the same.
In the drawings I have shown several types A, each having a main body portion 1 and an offset portion 2 at its upper end. The main or body portion has sides 33 which are desirably at right angles to its front 4-; that is to say the sides 33 extend vertically from the front face of the type 4:. The offset 2 has sides which are also desirably vertical and connected with the sides 33 by horizontal sides or faces G-6. The slanting or Italic letters are thus formed upon these type and portions thereof which would ordinarily overhang the sides of the type are fully supported by the main body portion and off-set of the type which together extend completely along the type faces or letters. Thus there are no objectionable overhangs on the sides of the type and at the same time the type letters are fully supported throughout their entire area, thereby afiording greater strength and preventing bending or depression of any part of the type face as well as rendering the type more convenient to handle and manipulate.
It will be noticed that the side faces 3-3 and 5-5 are vertical and not slanting relatively to the front or base faces I I, although the type letters are slanting or inclined. As a result, the faces or sides by which the type abut or contact with one another, are square or vertical to the base line, and so there is no tendency for the type to slide upon one another, as would be the case if the abutting faces were inclined. It will also be seen that the type are composed of but two parts, a main body part and a single offset so that with the vertical sides there is no need of more than one offset, there being no tendency of the type to slide vertically upon one another as would be the case if the sides were inclined.
It will be understood that changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is 1. A series of type for the various letters of the alphabet, forming slanting letters, the various types having bodies made of a main body portion and an offset body portion at one side of the main body portion, the latter being for the bottom of the letter and the offset portion for the top thereof, said offset portion being in the direction of the slanting letter, and both of the said portions being of substantially uniform width from top to top and having sides vertical to the base line of the type, so that the entire side of any type will fit against the entire opposite side of any other type of the series.
2. Printing type for slanting letters having side ofisets at the top, said offsets constituting bodily offset top portions of the type units and said offsets being in the direction of the slant of the letters, and having vertical sides, the projection formed by the offset of one type fitting into the recess formed by the oflset of the adjacent type.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my7nanie this 18th day of October A. D., 190
SIDNEY C. GAUNT.
