THOMAS R. HERB', or ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters-Patent .Nm-98,37 7, dated December28, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT- IN CAR-Comme.
The-schedule referred to in there Lettera Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TrroMAs'R. Hann, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny, and State 'of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Figures 2 and 3, views of some of the devices" used.
Letters of reference denote parts.
'lhe body of the bumper A is hollow, and of the same construction as those ordinarily in use.
A carriage, A, supported by ordinary' frictionrollers, A2, rests on the lower port-ion of the internal part of said bumper, said carriage A1 being provided at'the one extremity with an ordinary geared rack, A, projecting' therefrom iu such a vmanner that an ordinary geared pinion, A, attached rto a' vertical shaft, A5, will engage the teeth of said rack A3, and
by the revolution of said shaft A5, said rack A3. and4 carriage A1 will be forced forward or backward, as required. Y
Said shaft A5 .passes through said bumper A, and is provided with anordinary ratchet-wheel, As.
Pivoted to said bumper A is an ordinary pawl, A7, in such a manner that its point will, if required, engage the teeth of said4 wheel A, preventing said fshaft A5 from revolving.
Said carriage Al is furthermore provided atits upper portion with ii'ictlon-rollers B, on which rest-s, when the bumpers a-re coupled, a curved cone, B1, having a dat base, resting on before-named rollers B.
Said cone Bl has a groove B2 aroundA its periphery, near to its base, said groove being encircled with the ordinary coupling-link B3.
The upper part of said cone passes upward into a curved recess, B, on the upper part 'of the body' of said bumper A, the whole being so arranged that by the moving backward of the carriageA, the linkv B1 and cone Bl fall out of place.v
By pushing `forward. said carriage A1, the Vcone Bis kept in place, carrying with it the link B3, which is preventedfrom being withdrawn bythe cone B1 pressing against the recess B;
Said bumperA is furthermore provided with a re cess, NC, inside of which is an ordinary curved, spring, 0.1, so arrangedthat when the link B3 is forced -into said recess C, said spring Gl holds said link B in position for coupling.
The bumper E is constructed hollow, and of the i same material as those ordinarily in' use. Curved springs El E2 are attached to the inner side' of the bull-.head E, in sucha manner as they willv penetrate through suitable slots, E', in the sides of .said bumperE, and meet at or nearthe centre thereof, `their upper portions being provided with seats F,`
so arranged that the ordinary coupling-pin Gf rest thereon. Y
Said springs are furthermore provided with vertical .rollers G1, one to each, said-rollersl being situated` at or near the part of said springs, opposite to the mouth of lsaid bumper E; the whole being Yso relatiyelyarranged thatA the link B, being "held in place by thecone B1, and pushed'against the springs E" E2, will force apart the same; the pin G, being then unsupportedfalls through theV link B, andl couples together both the bumpers.-
Having thus described my invention,l What I claim as new, and desire to lsecure by Let` ters Patent, is-
' 1; The carriage A1, rollers'A2 B, rack A, shaft A5, pinion A4, ratchet A6, and pawl A7,' in combination with the curvedcone B1,v link B3, spring Gl, and bumper A,havi,ng recessesB and O, when constructed,.arranged, and .operating substantially as and for the purpose described and set forth.
2. The arrangementjof the above devices, in'combi-n'ation with the bumperE, -springs E1 E2, seatF,v
rollers G1, and pin G, when constructed and arranged and operating substantially as described, and for-the -purpose set forth.4
In testimony that I claim. the foregoing as my own,
I' aix. my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
THOS. R. BERD.-
