CHARLES E. ROYSE,'OF INDIANTA, ASSIGNOB'OF. ONE- I-EALF 'IO CHARLES A.
WINTERS, OF EUGENE, INDIANA.
1 THROWING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. RoYsE,
a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Eugene, county of Vermilion, and State of Indiana, have mvented a certain new and useful Throwing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference be-' ing had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide One of the features is to construct a simple and cheaply made game and one which may be easily carried about and set up where desired.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2, Fig. 1,
showing a portion of the device in section and a portion in elevation.
As shown in the drawings there is a vertical frame or stand 10, having legs 11 for supporting the frame at the height from the ground at which a baseball is thrown.
In front of the frame 10, there is a circular target 12, against which a baseball is thrown and which is rigidly secured to a plunger 13. The plunger 13 passes horizontally through said frame and extends, to the rear thereof. There are bearings or rollers 14 secured in the front and rear of said frame for holding the plunger in place and allowing it to freely move therein with as little friction as possible. An upright 15 is se-- cured near the rearwall of the frame, held firmly in place by an interposed bearing 16.
On said plunger, secured rigidly thereto, there is a collar 18 about half-way between the front and rear portion of the frame. A spiral spring 19 surrounding said plunger lies between said upright 15 and said collar 18 for holding said plunger and target 12 in its outward or inoperated position. That portion of the plunger 13, which extends rearward and past therear portion of said frame is notched on the upper side at 20and Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted Sept, 7, 1915. Application filed March 8, 1915. Serial no. 13,043. i i i there is a metal spring 21 secured to the rear side of said frame adapted to engage said notches tohold said'plu'nger in the position to which it is forced when the target is struck by a' baseball. A cord 22 passing through the frame and overthe pulley 23 is attached at the free end of saidspring, so as to disengage it from said notches when it is desired that the plunger return to its inoperated position. There is a wheel or circular disk 24 which stands directly above the rear portion of said frame on the standards 25. Said wheel is pivotally connected to the plunger at26 by a lever 27. There are a plurality of holes 28 in said wheel to which said lever 27' may be pivoted, by which means the operation of the device may be regulated. There, is a lever 29 rigidly bolted to the lower side of said wheel and extending forward through a suitable slot in the forward part of said frame. Said lever 29has a slot in its free end through which a pin 30 passes forengaging an indicating rod 31. Said indicating rod is held in a vertical position by the standard 32,. said rod being adapted to move up and down said standard. On the upper end of said rod there is a pointer or indicator 33, which registers with graduation marks 34:- On the lower end of the front face of the forward portion of said frame there is a horizontal member 35, extending outwardlyflush with said target, which has a groove 36, and in which a pin 37 rigidly secured to said target and extending downward may operate, thus prohibiting the revolving movement of said target.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the ball strikes the target the force due to the impact'forces the plunger back against the spring 19 as shown indotted lines. The "spring 21 drops down into the ratchet teeth or notches on said plunger and holds the plunger in its actuated position. The movement of the plunger operates the wheel so that it lifts the lever 29 andforces upward theindicating rod 21, thus recordingthe force of the impact. The plunger may then be released by pulling the cord 30 and removing the spring from engagement with said notches. By having a plurality of holes 28 in said wheel and by adjusting the wheel in relation to the tension of the spring the force may be accurately indicated.
The invention claimed is 1. A throwing machine having a frame, a plunger extending through said frame, a link pivoted to said plunger, an indicator supported on said frame and a Wheel pivotally connected With said plunger by said link for actuating said indicator.
2. A throwing machine having a frame a plunger extending therethrough, a target on one end of said plunger, a Wheel supported on said frame, a link pivotedly connecting said plunger to said Wheel and a rod securely attached near the periphery of said Wheel and pivotally connected to said indicator for actuating the same.
3. A throwing machine having a frame, a plunger extending therethrough, a target on one end of said plunger, a Wheel supported on said frame, a link pivotedly connecting said plunger to said Wheel and a means for holding and releasing said plunger after it has been actuated.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of the Witnesses herein named.
