TARGET FIGURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed March 12, 1914. Serial No. 824,241.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (Mrs J. BOYT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clatskanie, in the county of Columbia and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Target Figures, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to target figures with detachable faces, but more particularly to that class of figures where a ball is thrown at a target which protrudes from the front of the figure and when struck with a ball the head is forced backwardly as shown in the drawing.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of this kind that is simple in construction, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture;--and further to provide means whereby a detachable face may be applied to the head of the figure, and such face changed conveniently whenever desired.
In order to fully comprehend my invention and the art to which it relates, reference must be had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this application, of which :the Figure is a fanciful picture embodying my invention.
In the practice of the invention I employ a body portion 2 with a head 3, hinged thereto, and said head having fastened to the front portion thereof a face at by means of transverse strap 5.
At the front of the body 2 is a button 6, with a rod 7 connected thereto; said rod passing through bearings 8 and 9 respectively and abutting bell-crank 10, which is pivoted Within body 2; resting on said bellcrank is a vertical pin 11 which passes to the chin 12 of face 4 when the head 3 is in normal position; said pin being prevented from lateral movement by means of transverse guides 13-14.
In order to operate this invention, a ball strikes at button 6 which forces rod 7 against the vertical arm 10* of the bell-crank which raises horizontal arm 10 upwardly; said horizontal arm striking vertical pin 11 which forces head 3 backwardly on hinge 15 as shown in the drawing. \Vhen pin 11 forces head 3 backward it falls back to arm 10 of the bellcrank, and the impact of said pin forces arm 10 against the end of rod 7 which is pressed back to normal horizontal position by the recoil of spring 16 which encircles said rod intermediate bearing 8 and button 6.
My invention may be constructed of any material and made any size deemed suitable for all the requirements of such a device, and while I'have illustrated and described a preferred form of construction and combinations of elements considered essential in materializing the same, I wish to include in this application all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may be fairly considered to lie within the scope and purview of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it relates may be enabled to construct and use the same, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a target-figure,abody,ahead hingedly attached to said body, a detachable face on said head, straps to attach and release said face, a transverse rod within said body, hearings to support said rod, a bell-crank at the approximate central portion of said body, a vertical pin resting on one arm of said bell-crank and contacting with said head, said pin being adapted to force said head backwardly when the vertical arm of the bell-crank is struck by the transverse rod, and means to adjust said transverse rod to its normal horizontal position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
