Description

Letters Patent No. 81,729, dated lS'eptcmb/.c' l, 1868.
IMPRQVED BRA-KE FOR MACHINERY.
@tige Scintille infant te in tlgrse'rttcrs ateut nur mating part tt tige tame.
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, D. S. BAKER, of West Blo0micld,-Onta1'io county, in the State of New York, have invented a new and improved Brake; and I do hcrebyideclare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tov theletters of reference marked thereon, in which like parts are represented by like letters in the several figures. l
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of certain parts,to h e hereafter described, whereby to 'prevent any retrograde motion of any machine or attached wheel, particularly where a reverse or backward motion would operate injuriously.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings- Figure I represents an elevation of my device, and
Figure 2 an enlarged vertical section (longitudinally.) of the brake.
A represents any support for my device.
B and C, wheels, attached to a shaft, F, the former of which mayl be a balance or band-wheel.
The periphery of C, thc smaller one, is covered with a ring or band of rubber, a, secured by a suitable groove in said wheel, or in any other desirable way to hold it, or it may be attached to the side of the rim, or a grooved flange attached to the side of the wheel, at any desired distance from the periphery, thus enabling the wheel C to be used for a band-whcel. l
D is a block, secredto support A, and to this is fastened a spring, b, the inner end of which carries a triangular-shaped frame, consisting oi` two metallic cheeks, attached to and oscillating about I), as seen at e, so as to vary the inclination of E.
The .inclination of bl may also be varied to regulate the friction on rubber hand a, by raising thc outer end of spring laas seen at t', iig. 2.
d is a friction-roller, secured to the lowe'ronter ends of the cheeks of frame E, and bears upon the periphery of band a, which, when the wheel is revolving, as shown by'the arrows in fig. 2, d, revolves, as shown by the arrow over it; and, under these circumstances, the ratchet-teeth t, on the inner ends of cheeks, are raised, and
l do not coulc'in contact with the rubberband a..
The friction-roller is so arranged as to permit a limited reverse motion, say, for instance, suiiicient to raise the needle of a sewing-machine, or rrr-thread, thereby saving a stitch, but beyond this, a further reverse motion of Cyr/ith its band, a, draws down E, and, its ratchet-teeth coming in contact with t, stops further backward motion.
'Ihe whole pressure of' the spring b shouldbe upon the friction-roller, keeping it upon the-band.
The distance the wheel C can be moved backward can be regulated, that is, increased or diminished, by means of a movable pin, c, passing through cheeks oi' E, and which the inner end of b bears up against, so as to increase or diminish the distance from the roller to the spring.
The' cheeks of E are held together by the axle at e, that of d, and pin f.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isv A friction-brake, constructed and operated in the manner as shown and described.
