HIP-STRAP BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 31, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. HOSKA, a citizen of the United States of America, rcsiding at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hip- Strap Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to harness devices and especially to the connection between the hip-straps of the breeching and the backstrap; and has for its objects to facilitate the manufacture of the harness, to provide in a single body the buckles for a pair of straps, to eliminate the other buckles usually used on the said straps and thus remove the cause of many runaways, and to inclose the free ends of the said straps. I attain these and other objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation showing my improved hip-strap-buckle in use; Fig. 2 is a plan thereof on a larger scale; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The invention is incorporated in a metallic body 1 formed substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The body 1 has two strap holes 2 in its lower face throughwhich the two hip-straps 3 pass. The buckle tongues a are mounted on the body 1 in such a way as to cross the said holes 2 and to pass through suitable holes 5 in the straps 3.
The body 1 becomes narrower at the upper end 6 and bends slightly toward the base and has a bar 7 formed under it, across the base around which the strap 8, forming part of the back-strap 9, is looped whereby the body 1 is secured to the back-strap. The space between the parts 6 and 7 is open and allows the free ends of the hip-straps 3 to pass therethrough into the leather casing 10 which is sewed to the strap 8 adjacent to the upper end 6 of the body 1. An opening 11 is made near the center of the body 1, into which a chain-hook 12 projects downwardly.
The general form of the body 1 is that of an inverted saucer through which the straps 3 pass, and is designed to prevent the reins from catching on any protruding strap or other projection and thus eliminate a fruitful source of runaways. It is placed near the top of the hip thus facilitating the manufacture of the harness by reducing the number of pieces to be sewed. The chainhook being combined in the same body with the buckles makes a further reduction in the work of manufacture as well as an improvement in appearance. The casing 1.0 which comes adjacent to its upper open end covers the ends of the straps 3 thus making a neat finish to this part of the harness.
Having described my invention, what I claim is;
A hip-strap buckle comprising a body having its edges forming a U-shapcd base and having its central portion raised above said edges; with two apertures 2 in its face adapted to admit the hip straps therethrough; with a central aperture 11; the parts of the body between the central aperture 11 and the first mentioned apertures 2 being rounded to form buckle-bars; buckletongues in the apertures 2 and mounted on each of said buckle-bars and passing back of the base and adapted to pass through the hip-straps to hold them from being pulled out of the apertures 2; a bar 7 formed across the ends of the U-shaped base and adapted to be secured to the harness; and a cover 6 integral with the central part of the body and extending over the said bar 7 and sep arated therefrom and forming therewith an orifice for the free ends of said hip-straps and forming a substantially continuous surface with the casing formed on the harness, substantially as and for the purpose described.
