WATERPROOF SHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24;, 1911.
Application filed April 30, 1910. Serial No. 493,116.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS H. Ynnnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vaterproof Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in water proofing shoes and the composition for accomplishing this result,
and has for its object to produce a composition of matter and so apply the same to a fabric which is to be stitched into the shoe so as to prevent the passage of water through the sole or around the stitching to the inside of the shoe.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention a )pertains may understand how to make an use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a cross section of a shoe showing my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2, a similar view of a slightly modified form of my improvement.
In carrying out my invention, I use any suitable fabric or other material indicated at A, which is generally termed an insert, and after water proofing this material I secure it upon the upper surface of the sole B between said sole and the welt C by the stitches which secure said welt to the sole. It will be noted that the inner edge of the Welt O is scarfed. This will protect the foot of the wearer from moisture which would otherwise pass through the sole and gain access to the inside of the shoe, and as the composition with which I treat the fabric A is such that it closes upon the stitching, no moisture can pass to the inside of the shoe around these stitches. This composition consists of paraffin having a sufficient amount of coloring matter added thereto, said coloring matter being solvent in the paraffin.
In applying the composition to the fabric the former is melted in a water jacketed vessel, the fabric dip ed in the composition while the latter is rot, and after being removed is dried and is then ready for use, before described.
1) represents the lining of the shoe having that portion which is in proximity to the sole water proofed so as to protect the foot from moisture which might pass through the leather of the upper.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a slightly modified form of my invention in which I turn the lining under the welt, as indicated by E so that said lining will be situated between the welt C and the insert A, it being understood that said lining or a portion thereof has first been water proofed.
I have found in practice that that portion of av shoe having my improvement applied thereto will absolutely prevent the foot of the wearer from becoming moist regardless of how long the shoe may be exposed to water.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is-- A shoe comprising a sole, an upper, 21 waterproof insert superimposed on the sole, a welt stitched to said sole and insert and having its inner ed e scarfed, and a lining for said upper, saicI lining being doubled out-- wardly beneath the welt, stitches through the abutting upper and Welt and through the main and doubled portion of the lining.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
