To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. URANN, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fabrics for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 represents a transverse section of a piece of stock suitable for making boots and shoes in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2, a side view of a boot made from or of said stock, with a portion of the boot broken away for the purpose of illustrating the invention.

My invention consists of a fabric for boots and shoes, composed of a layer of suitable material for the construction of boots or shoes, a layer of cork, and a layer of fibrous-material cemented together.

In carrying my invention into practice a sheet of cork or of prepared cork is first affixed to canvas or other suitable backing to form a sheet, and which it will here snffice to term cork, and the latter cemented or otherwise secured to the material of which the boot or shoe is made. -It is not only applicable to the material forming the vampor upper and legging of a boot or shoe, but also to the material forming the sole, and when so applied forms a soft and warm lining, which will be found especially advantageous when applied to rubber boots and shoes, and such applica tion or use of it will be selected in the following description, by way of example, to illustrate the invention.

In making a rubber boot or shoe with my improved lining I take sheet-rubber, as it now is or may be prepared for making boots or shoes, and cement to the inner surface of the sheet commercial sheet-cork or prepared cork in the sheet, as hereinhefore referred to. Thus 4 5 prepared, the improved stock, formed of rubber and cork combined, is utilized by cutting and molding it into the form required, as rubber boots and shoes having no such lining have heretofore been made. 0

In Fig. 1, 1) indicates the rubber ofthe stock, and cits cork lining, cemented to the inner surface of the rubber. In the production of a boot or shoe from such stock the cork forms either the lining or the interlining of the boot or shoe, and is accordingly distinguishable from the body or other exterior portion of the boot or shoe. In Fig. 2 it is represented as forming an interlining, I) being the rubber, c the cork, and d an inner lining ofwool or cotton with which the boot is furnished or finished.

A rubber boot or shoe thus lined with cork will not expose the wearer to that feeling of chilliness which is now experienced with the ordinary rubber boot or shoe when stepping into snow or water, and will be generally warmer and easier to the feet, the cork preventing that drawing action of the rubber which is so unpleasant and painful to the feet.

The cork c is made water-proof when required, and when so prepared and used as a lining in boots or shoes made of leather, felt, or woolen would make such boots or shoes wa ter-proof.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A fabric for boots and shoes, consisting of an outside layer of suitable material for the construction of boots or shoes, an inside layer of cork cemented thereto, and abottom layer of fibrous material cemented to the under face of the cork, substantially as herein shown and described.
