SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,299, dated November 23, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER SUTOLIFFE, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Todmorden, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linings for Boots or Shoes, (for which I have obtained a patent in England, dated August 25, 1892, No. 15,268,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to the linings of boots and shoes and the like, but more particularly to the back linings, which may or may not be made in combination with a loop and heel cushion, the object of my invention being to make a more durable and healthy lining.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe, partly in section. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the liner.

In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now make reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings illustrative thereof, wherein Fig. 1 illustrates a ladys boot with a portion of the upper removed, so

as to more clearly show the application thereto of my improved lining, which is marked A. This lining is cut or formed from leather of suitable quality and shape, and it is fixed to the back of the boot and on the insole of the boot, but it may extend farther into the boot than the drawings show, if necessary. The under side of this boot-lining is covered with swans-down or other soft absorbing material, and the two are made secure by rows of stitching, as indicated in the drawings. This lining is shown in plan View at Fig. 2 and again in Fig. 3, bent to the required shape.

The lining is formed of a single piece of leather backed with absorbent material. The lower portion 0 is shaped to fit the heel portion of the insole, and the upper part a is shaped to fit the heel portion of the upper. Notches e are cut in the lining at the junction of the parts a and 0, so that the lining can be bent crosswise between the notches and the projections B of the part a tucked under the part 0.

I claim as my invention 1. A shoe-heel lining formed of a single piece of perforated leather backed with absorbent material secured to the leather by rows of stitches, and comprising an upper part shaped to fit against the upper, and a lower part shaped to fit over the insole, notches being formed at the junction of the said parts permitting the lining to be bent crosswise and fitted into the heel portion of the shoe, sub stantially as set forth.

2. A shoe-heel lining formed of a single piece of perforated leather backed with absorbent material secured to the leather by rows of stitches, and comprising an upper part shaped to fit against the upper, and a lower part shaped to fit over the insole, notches being cut at the junction of the said parts thereby forming projections B, and the said lining being bent crosswise between the notches and the projections tucked under the said lower part, substantially as set forth.
