UNDERG'AIRMEN T.
u Specification ef Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 17, l1911.,
Application led October 14, 1908:v Seriall'No.-457 ,599.
to improve the construc-tionof the overlap'-v pi-ng gores ot undergarinents, of the typel usually designated as union-suits, and to these ends, the invention consists ot' `the novel construction and arrangement ot parts, hereinafter described and delinedjin" the claims. y
The 'present invention .is directed to an improvement or n'iodiiication of the undergarment. disclosed and broadly claimed in my prior Patent, 859,705, issued of date July 9th, 1907. f
ln the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the severalviews.
Referring to thedrawings: Figure'l is a view in front elevation, showing the iinproved undergarment; Fig. 2- is a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail iu horizontal section, taken on the line :r3 zu of Figfl; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation, illustrating a slightly modified forni or arri igeinent of the gores.
The numeral l indicates the union undergarineiit oi knitted or other fabric, the same opening 3, and seat'opening 4. rlhe -so-called goresor overlapping iiap'portions 5 and 6 are stitched or otherwisesecured to the seat portion ot' the garment. The inner gore 6, approxiniateiy at the place where the inter-l mediate portion ot' its inner edge joins the body ot the garment, is provided with a button 7 and at the intermediate portion vot' its free edge, it has a button hole 8. 'At the intermediate portion of its free edge, the outer iap 5 is provided with a button hole 9, that 'cooperates with the button 7. A small inner fiap 10 provided with a button 11 is stitched or otherwise attached to theback of the body portion of the garment, as shown, approximately at the place where the intermediate portion of the inner edge of the outer gore 5 it attached'to the said garment.
The said flap 10 is, of course, located at the inner side of the gore v5., and the inner gore 6 is adapted to be placed between the said Hap 10 and gore, and to be there ,secured by engagement of 'the buttonl ll'with the button hole 8. .In this way, the two gores 5 and 6 are connected withoutcausingthe two gores to vbe drawn, the one through an opening 1nthe other. Neither is an opening in the outer gore necessary-in order to permit of` access to the flap 10, foi-the purpose of but# toning the button 11 into the button hole 8 of the gore .6. In the construction'shown in Figs.v 1, 2 and 3, however, av `small slit or ope-ning 12 is provided in the Aback of the garment or in the outer gore 5,- o'pposite to the point where 'the button l1 .i's-' engaged with the button lio1e"-8.n This slit or'opening l2 affords extremely easy access to the but- I ton 11 and does not require that the outer gore 5 be turned over in order to reach the said button.V In the construction shown in Fig. 4t, however, the slit or opening. 12, is
dispensed with, and the gores 5 and (fare narrowed up both at their upper qand lower extremities, whereas, in ,the construction shown in Figs. 1'-, 2:-andfz3, the said gores 5 and 6v are widest 'at' their extreme upper ends where they are stitched to the garment, and areztapered downward.
From what has been said, it willbe understood, that the goresv are capable oftconsiderable modification, and may, of cou-rse, be made of any suitable dimensions both as to length and width. The principal feature of the invention is vthe provisionof the. button equipped inner iiap or piece,'be'tween which, and an outer gore, the inner gore of the garment is adapted tobe placedfafnd secured to thesaidbutton equippedinner fiap.
The above described arrangement of the gores permits of vthe use of narrowgores, which will naturally lie better, and furthermore, said construction may be very easily and cheaply made.
VVhat-I claim is:
1. An undergarinent having a seat openm ying with overlapping gores atthe .sides of said seat opening,'and' a flap independent or said gores secured to the inner surface of the back of said garment, adjacent to the intermediate portion of the outer gore, and adapted vto be secured 1n the intermediatr portion of the inner gore, when the latter 1s placed between the same and the outer gore.
2. Annndergarment having a scatopen- "'ng with overlapping gores at the sides of said' seat opening,v and "a button equipped fp independent of said gol-es secured With'- in the inner surface of the back of seid' gernient, and adapted' to be .buttoned to the intermediate portion of the inner gore, when the letter is placed between the same and the outer gore.
3, An undergarnient having a seat opening with overlapping gores at the sides of said, seat opening, and a button equipped iiap secured to the inner surface of the back of seid garment, and adapted to be engaged with' the button hole in the intermediate edge portion-of the inner gore, when the latter is 2 placed between the same and the outer gore, the seid outer gore or back portion of said garment having a slit through which access may be had to che said button equipped flap.
In testimony whereof I. affix my signature 20 in presence of two Witnesses.
