Description
ratiatsam CARL C. I. MEYER, 0F YANKTON, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
Lette/rs Patent No. 98,084, dated December 21, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SURVEYQRS MARK.
The Schedule referred to inV these Letters Patent `and making part o! the same. v
To all who-m it may concern;-
Be it known that I7 CARL 0.1. MEYER, of Yankton, Yankton county, Dakota Territory, have invented a new and improved Surveyors Mark; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, `clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part -of this specification. v
My invention relates to surveyors marks, and consisls in making or manufacturing a mark out of burnt clay, porcelain, or any similar. material, or in coating a piece of wood or metal with burnt clay, porcelain, or other similar material, and in forming, Aby pressure, mould/in g, cutting, or insel-ibi ng, im pressions upon each end of the niark,'which will convey the information that it is designed to give.
These marks are especially designed for use in the Government surveys ofpuhlic lands in the IVest, when these surveys extend over extensive plains and prairies destitute of stone and timber, as well as for other snrveys in the same regions.
As is well known, the Government surveyors, -in running out lands, destitute of stone and timber, into ranges, townships, sections, 850.', are obliged to prepare their mar is or stakes inadvance; that these stakes are made of ivood, and, in connection with mounds and excavations, are used to indicate or niarkthe corners ot' townships and sections.
It'is also well known that in a few years these marks become almost obliterated by the fires which frequently sweep over the country, or by the action of the elements, so that it is impossible to iind the points these,
able size and sha-pe, made of burnt clay, porcelain, or other suitable material, or of a block of wood or metal coated with either of these materials, and then having formed thereon, at each end, suitable devices to indicate the point it is set to indicate. v
The drawing also shows that instead of one continuous mark there'may be two heads, A B, or that the two ends may be united bya piece or rod, C, of a similar material. 1
I thus make my marks out of the materials as herein described, with the devices required to indicate the place or corner they are designed to mark, eut, moulded, or in any suitable way impressed on each end of the same, as shown in the drawing.
These marks I set inthe ground, at the points,'.or they are/carried by surveying parties and placed atthe point desired, and they will remain, unless removed. by design, for years, prooi' against tire or other destructive elements. And should the endprojecting from the ground be broken oif by accident or design, the end remainingin the ground will still make known the position of' the corner, so that at any subsequent period to the survey, parties who desire to find these corners for any purposes, whether it be for running out their lands, or for finding in what section of the country they are travelling, or in what direction, may do s0 without difficulty.
Havingthus described my invention,
That I claim, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a surveyors mark, made ot' burnt clay, porcelain, or similar materials, or coated with the same, and provided with impressed or projecting inscriptions on each end, as herein described. n
2. A surveyors mark, consistingot' two heads, A
l and B, and an intermediate conneating-piece, 0,v all made of the materialsandin the manner herein shown and described.
yCARL G. l, MEYER-.
