HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2c, 1921.
Application filed April 15, 1919. Serial No. 290,266.
. Constructions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in roads and more particularly to roads constructed of a plurality of sections.
An important object of this invention is to provide a road constructed of avplurality of sections having their abutting edges extending diagonally across the road whereby a vehicle upon traveling on the road will engage but one of its wheels at a time with the joints of the sections.
A further object of the invention is to providenovel means for interlocking the sections of the road whereby the same are prevented from lateral displacement.
A further object of the'invention is to provide a road whi'ch'is durable, of highly simplified construction and desirable in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in whicl1.like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
The figures are plan views of portions of a road illustrating diflercnt modifications of my invention.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown some preferred embodiments of my invention. the numeral 5- gcnerally designates a road constructed of a plurality of sections 6. The sections may be-of such material as asphalt. concrete, or other hard material which expand and contract under the influence of hot and cold weather respectively. The sections 6 have their abutting edges 7 extending diagonally of the road whereby a vehicle upon crossing each meeting place of the sections will ongage butone of its wheels at a time with the meeting places of the sections and the ve hicle will thereby pass smoothly over the meeting places.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Figure 1 one longitudinal edge portion of each of the sections 6 is provided with a rectangular recess or pocket 8, receiving longitudinally extending tongues 9 carried by the adjacent edges 7.
The interfitting connection between thesections 6 prevents lateral displacement of any of the sections and retains them in longitudinal alinement.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 2, the sections lO-are provided with diagonally disposed abutting edges 11. One vertical edge portion of each of the sections 10 is provided with a V-shaped recess 11 receiving V-shaped tongues 12 carried by the adjacent edges of the sections 10. The interfitt-ing connection between the several sections 10 prevents displacement of the sections.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 3, the sections 3 are provided with diagonally disposed abutting edges 14. The longitudinal edge portions of the sections extend transversely of the road and thereby prevent lateral displacement of the sections.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 4, the sections 15 are provided with diagonal abutting edges 16 extending entirely across the, road.
Ha vlng thus descrlbed my invention, what I claim is its acuminate corners with tongues, the
tongues and notches being located at parallel edge portions of the section.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
