ADJUSTABLE WORK-REST FOR BENGHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HENRY HowE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paintsville, in the county of Johnson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable vWork- Rests for Benches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a work rest or support for benches, particularly those used by wood working mechanics, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which may be readily applied to the bench and will effectively support one end of the work upon the face of the bench, and which may be easily and quickly adjusted to provide for the various widths and thicknesses of the work.
Another object of the invention is to provide a working bench having a work engaging clamp which is longitudinally slidable upon the said bench so as to adapt itself to the various lengths of board or other work to be operated upon.
With the above, and other objects in view, which will be more apparent as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a work bench provided with the improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation, parts being broken away, of the improved clamp removed from the bench. Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the screw and nut employed in connection with the device.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 designates a bench of thatclass commonly employed by wood working mechanics. The bench l is provided at one of its ends with the usual clamping jaw 2, the same being operated through the medium of the usual screw 3. The clamfping jaw 2 is adapted to support one end o a board to be operated upon by the mechanic and the leg 4 adjacent the leg to which the said jaw is attached is, in the ordinary practice, provided with a plurality of staggered perforations, each being adapted for the reception of a suitable pin whereby the opposite end of the board is supported. This method of securing the board is not at all satisfactory as, while the pin supports the end of the board it does not prevent lateral movement of the same while being operated upon and a great loss of time and labor is thus occasioned. Furthermore the pins cannot be longitudinally adjusted in order to support the various lengths of work.
My improvement comprises what may be termed a casing 5, which has one of its longitudinal edges provided with a tongue A adapted to be fitted within a longitudinally extending groove B within the under face of the top of the bench 1 adjacent its front edge, and the lower longitudinal edge of the casing 5 is provided with a suitable groove C, which is adapted to work upon the lower longitudinally connecting strip D of the bench 1. By this arrangement, it will be noted that the casing 5 may be readily and quickly adjusted toward or away from the leg 1, so as to receive work of various lengths. This casing 5 is provided with a vertically extending slot 6, which communicates with a plurality of staggered longitudinally extending cut away portions or recesses 7. Byreference to the several figures of the drawing it will be noted that these recesses 7 are positioned adjacent the opposite walls provided by the vertical slot 6. The outer wall 8 of the said casing 5 is likewise provided with an alining vertical slot as well as alining longitudinally extending recesses similar to the slot 6 and the recesses 7, and the casing is also provided with a vertical channel between the outer and inner member of the said casing. The walls of the channel adjacent the longitudinal recesses 7 are provided with longitudinally extending pockets 9, and these pockets are adapted for the reception of a rectangular member 10 having a central threaded opening which is adapted for the reception of a threaded bolt 12 of the screw clamping member 13. This clamping member 13 has its outer extremity provided with a head 111, the said head being projected in opposite directions away from the threaded screw and the said projecting portions are adapted to serve as a binding means whereby the work is forced tightly into contact against the side of the bench, and whereby the upward movement of the same is effectively prevented. The longitudinal member 10, which may be termed a nut has its ends adjacent its threaded opening of a size correspomling with the walls provided by the pockets 9, so that' the same may be snugly seated therein when the clampiiig member is adjusted to bring the said nut into the pocket corresponding with the Width ot' the work to be operated upon.
From the above lescription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that l have provided an extremely simple and eilective device tor the purpose intended, and it is to be 'further `understood that while l have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details oi? construction within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to it desired.
Having thus fully described the invention, what l claim as new is l. In combination with a work bench provided with the usual clamping jaw, ot a workholding device for said bench, adapted to actin conjunction with the aw, said device comprising a casing having a vertical slot and a plurality off longitudinal slots arranged upon each side ot' the walls provided by the said vertical slot, a headed member having a bolt positioned within the casing and adapted to be received in any of the longitudinal recess, and said member being provided with a head extending` in diametrically opposite directions from the thread ed portion thereot.V
In combination with a work bench having the usual clamping screw, ot' a work holding device adapted to cooperate with said clamp, said holding device comprising a casing having a central opening, the sides of the casing being provided with vertical slots communicating with the central opening, the sides being further provided with oppositcly disposed recesses connnunicating with the vertical opening, the casing being further provided with pockets arranged in a line with the longitudinal recesses, a substantially rectangular member Within the casing and adapted to be seated within any of the pockets, a threaded bolt member for the rectangular member, and said bolt member being provided with a, head projecting at right angles from the opposite sides thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
