CLAMP AND HOLDER. (Application led Dsc. 14, 1900.

ffmullllmunr A IMU lINrrnn Sra'rns ALBERT ANNETT, OF EAST JAFFREY, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
CLAMP AND HOLDER.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668.399, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed December 14:, 1900. Serial No. 39,845. tNo model.)
To all 'whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I., ALBERT ANNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Jaffrey, in the county of Cheshire and'St-ate of New Hampshire, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Clamps and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe object of this invention is to produce a clamp and holder for use in clamping toget-her the two overlapping ends of the veneer forming the rim of the ordinary cylindrical or oval wooden box of commerce While the wooden disk forming the bottom is inserted therein, and, further, to hold said overlapping ends of the veneer together and in contact with the periphery of said disk while the glue which has previously been applied to said rim is setting.
Heretofore it has been the custom to manufacture wooden boxes having a rim formed of wood veneer by joining the overlapping edges of the veener together with tacks and by tacking or pegging with wooden pegs one edge of said rim to the disk forming the bottom of the box. I have improved this method of manufacture by joining the Veneer rim to the disk forming the bottom with glue, and it being necessary to hold the two overlapping ends of the veneer together while inserting the bottom disk, and also to hold said rim firmly in contact with said disk while the glue is setting, I have invented the hereinafter-de` scribed clamp and holder for that purpose.
The invention consists in a clamp and holder in two parts, a male member and a female member, the male member having a wedgeshaped standard adapted to engage a V-shaped slot in said female member and to hold firmly the veneer rim of a wooden box placed between two adjacent faces of said standard and slot.
The invention further consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved clamp and holder, showing the same holding a box veneer rim with a bottom disk attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal plan section of the same withV the bottom in position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 2.
Fig. lis a perspective View showing the clamp attached to a reel, said clamp acting as a holder for the box while the glue between the rim and bottom disk is sett-ing.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views thereof.
In the drawings, l0 is the clamp and holder, consisting of two parts,a wedge-shaped standard or male member 11, formed to enter a corresponding slot 12 in afemale member 13. 'Ihe male member 11 has a iiange 14 thereon, the under side of which is provided with a pin 15, integral therewith. The pin 15 is of the right size to enterahole 16 in the top of a work-table 17. In plan View or in a plane at right angles to its length the wedge 11 is formed in a concave curve substantially the same as the perimeter or rim of the box 19, and the face 20 of the slot l2 is formed in a corresponding convex curve. The face 2l of the wedge 18 is formed in a convex curve in plan'view, and the face 22 of the slot l2 is formed in a corresponding concave curve.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming the veneer rim 19 of the box to have had a strip of glue applied to the inner face thereof of a width equal to the thickness of the disk for the bottom of the box to which it is to be applied and also a strip of glue extending vertically across the said veneer at one end thereof and the wedge 11 placed in a vertical position upon the work-table 17 ,with the pin 15 inserted in the hole 16 therein, the Workman bends the said strip of veneer in a circle of a diameter slightly less than that of the finished box and overlaps the two ends thereof. Holding the bent veneer against the concave face 19 of the wedge 11 with the left hand he inserts the disk or bottom 23 in the interior of the bent rim and within half an inch of the lower edge of said rim. He next places the female member 13 upon said wedge in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the overlapping ends of the veneer irmly held between the concave face 18 of the wedge 11 and the convex face 20 of the member 13. The disk or bottom 23 is then tapped down until iiush with the lower edge of the rim 19. The member 13 is then given a final blow upon the top thereof to firmly set and hold the rim 19 to the bottom 23 of the box and also to firmly unite the overlapping ends of IOO said rim. The clamp is then removed from the table'and the pin 15 inserted in one of the holes 24 in the reel 25, where it remains un. til the glue is firmly set. A sufficient number of clamps is supplied to keep the Workman busy while the glue is setting. When the glue has set, the box is removed from the holder and then the clamp used for another box.
It will be noted that the curved faces of the slot and wedge adjacent to each other serve a twofold purpose-namely, that of conforming to the outline of the rim of the box and also of preventing any lateral motion of the member 13 with relation to the wedge-shaped member 11.
It is evident that the cover of the box may be constructed with the aid of my improved clamp and holder in the same manner as the body of the box hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A clamp and holder for use in the manufacture of boxes With a veneer rim, comprisinga male member and afemale member, said male member having a Wedge-shaped standard, said female member having a V-shaped slot adapted to engage said wedge-shaped standard, and hold said veneer rim between two adjacent faces of said Wedge and said V- shaped slot.
2. A clamp and holder for use in the manufacture of boxes with a veneer rim, comprisinga male member, and a female member, said male member having a'wedge-shaped standard, said female member having a V- shaped slot adapted toengage said wedge-shaped standard, two adjacent faces of said wedgeshaped standard and said V- shaped slot being respectively concave and convex in a plane at right angles to their length.
3. A clamp and holder for usein ihe manufacture of boxes With a veneer rim, comprisinga male member, and a female member, said male member having a Wedge-shaped standard, said femalemember having a V-shaped slot adapted to engage said wedge-shaped standard, two adjacent faces of said wedgeshaped standard and said V- shaped slot being respectively concave and convex in a plane at right angles to their length, the other two adjacent faces of said standard and slot being respectively convexvand concave.
4:. A clamp and holderv` comprising a male member and a female mem ber, said male member having a Wedge-shaped standard, said female member having a V- shaped slot adapted to engage said Wedge-shaped standard.
5. A clamp and holder comprising a male member and a female member, said male member having a wedge-Shaped standard, said female member having a V- shaped slot adapted to engage said wedge-shaped standard and means for attaching said clamp and holder to a stationary object.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALBERT ANNETT.
