ARNOLD CREIVIONINI,Y 0F FORT BRAGG, CALLIFORNIA..`
SQUARE-HOLE-DRILLING DEVICE.
Application ined December 19, 1922; Yserial Nn. 607,913.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARNOLD CREMONINI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Bragg, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Square- I-Iole-Drilling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to square hole drilling devices and more particularly to work holders therefor.
An object of the invention is the provision of a compact work holder for square hole drilling which may be readily attached to the bed plate of a machine and will securely hold the article being bored.
A further object of the invention is to provide a work holder having adjusting means whereby it may be readily changed to receive articles of different sizes.
A further object is the provision of an adjust-able guide to be mounted in the work holder which may also be adjusted when articles of different sizes are being bored.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a machine showing the invention applied,
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the work holder,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a similar view on line 5 5 of Figure 2,
Figure 6 is an end view of the boring tool or bit,
Figure 7 is a side elevation of the tool, and,
FigureS is a detail view of one of the clamping elements.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates the bed plate of a boring machine or drill press upon which the work to be bored is adapted to be supported. A tool holder 2 is mounted above the bed plate and is adapted to be lowered in any suitable manner. A bit 3 is arranged in the tool holder in any suitable manner. As shown, (see Figures 6 and 7), the bit is substantially triangular in cross section and is provided with cutting edges 4.
The work holder forming the subject matter ofthe-present invention consists of apair of substantially U-shaped members 5, which are: adapted -tok be clampedto the bed plate of the machine by boltsA 6, passing through/suitable open-ings in the clamping members. These-bolts are adapted to receive nuts 7 to retain them in position. As shown, one of the arms of each of the U-shaped members is provided with an enlargement 8 at its outer end, forming a substantially solid block through which the bolt passes. The face of one of the U-shaped members is roughened, as at 9, and is adapted to form a clamping surface to engage the article being bored. The block 8 of the other member is surrounded by a substantially U-shaped clamping jaw 10 having a roughened or serrated face 11 adapted to engage the article being bored. A similar member 12 is arranged over the clamping member 10 with the bases of the U extending in the opposite direction. A bolt 13 passes through an opening in the supporting member 5 and engages the U-shaped member 12 to permit adjustment of the space between the clamping faces 9 and 11.
A guide plate 14e is mounted over the space between the clamping faces and is provided with a guide opening 15. This member extends into the supporting `members 5 and is provided with longitudinal slots 16 to receive the bolts 6.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. The supporting members 5 are first adjusted to receive the work and the guide member 14e is arranged in proper position by adjusting the bolts 6 in the slots 16. After the work holder has been roughly adjusted, it is tightened by the bolt 13 which feeds the members 10 and 12 toward the work and causes the clamping faces 9 and 11 to firmly engage it.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A work support and drill guide for drills of the non-circular cut type, comprising two independent members fastened to bers to adjustably secure it to the bed plate of a machine, one of said members being provided with a stationary clamping jaw, a movable clamping jaw carried by the other l5 member, said jaw comprising a pair of U-shaped members, one of which is inverted and arranged within the other, a threaded rod carried by said supporting member and engaging the base of one of said U-shaped members, and a guide arranged above said clamping jaws, said guide being provided with a pair of elongated slots to receive said bolts;
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
