To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY Ii. CARPENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.

The ordinary garter for gentlemens use, composed of an elastic tape with means for the top of the hose, frequently causes considerable annoyance and discomfort to the wearer, and the elastic, if drawn sufficiently tight to keep it in place, will tend to retard circulation and if worn loose enough to be comfortable, will often drop down around the ankle. This will also happen when the elastic stretches or has become worn.

The object, therefore, of my invention, is to provide means whereby an elastic garter may be supported securely without the necessity of drawing the elastic tape or ribbon so tight around the leg of the wearer as to cause inconvenience or discomfort.

A further object is to improve the connection between the elastic tape and the hose, whereby the attachment can be more securely made and without danger of pulling the ends of the elastic tape out of their proper position.

The invention consists generally in the various constructions and combinations hereinafter pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view illustrating my invention in use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device to be attached to the top of the hose. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Fig. 4 is a view of the device for securing the tape or band to the undergarment. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 6 illustrates a modified construction. Figs. 7 and 8 are detailed views of another construction.

In the drawing, 2 represents an elastic tape or band such as is usually used on garters of this type. It is provided at one end with the usual loop 3 and at the other end with the hook device a.' A cord 5 -passes through said loop and is connected to the hook in the usual way. rIhis cord is shorter than is generally employed and has a tendency to draw the ends of the elastic band together rather than to pull down the ends toward the top of the hose. the cords have a loop formed in Specification of Letters Patent.

extends a considerable distance toward the hose and the attachment of the hose-fastenmg strain which frequently pulls the elastic band down out of its proper position. The short cord which I employ draws theV ends of the band together and obviates many of the objections to the use of the ordinary garter of this type.

Intermediate to the ends of the band I provide a plate 6 having slots 7 therein through which the band is inserted. The plate has a curved end 8 and a lever 9 is pivoted at 10 on the said plate and is provided on one edge with a series of teeth 11 arranged to cooperate with similar teeth 12 on the edge of an opening 13 formed in the said plate. rIhese teeth project baclrwardly out of the plane of the plate, as indicated in Fig. 5. A spring 14 normally holds the lever 9 with a yielding pressure toward the teeth 12 and a lug 15 on said lever permits its convenient operation by the wearer of the garter. The end of the lever extends under the curved end 8 and is protected thereby.

In using the device, the wearer of the garter will move the lever 9 and separate the teeth 11 from the teeth 12 and then insert a portion of the leg of the drawers between the teeth and when the lever is allowed to return to its normal position, the teeth will grip the garment and positively prevent the garter from slipping down the leg out of place. The device may be moved along the elastic band from one place to another, according to the position desired by the wearer.

A tape 16 is attached to the cord 5 and a plate 17 has a cam lever 18 at its upper end between which and said plate the lower end of the tape is inserted. A transverse slot 19 is provided in said plate through which the tape is passed and by moving the lever 18, the plate 17 may be adjusted up and down thereon, according to the position of the garter or the length of the hose. At the lower end of the plate 17 I provide jaws 2O and 21 having a space 22 between them to receive the edge of the upper end of the hose. A clamping plate 23 is hinged at 24: and is normally held in engagement with the jaw 20 by a spring 25. This device can be easily and quickly attached to the hose and will hold it securely without danger of slipping' and will not in any way damage the edge of the hose, as is frequently the case with devices having gripping teetl In F ig. 6 a modification is shown which consists in providing a plate 34 having a curved flange 35 at one end provided with a series of teeth 36. A jaw 37 is pivoted at 3S on the plate 3a and has an end to pass through a slot 39 in the flange and said end is curved and provided with teeth t0 to cooperate with the teeth 36. The plate 34 and the jaw 37 have loops for attaching the band thereto and when the tension is applied the 37 will swing' on its pivot and its teeth will be drawn toward the teeth 36 to grip the garment inserted between them.

In Figs. 7 and 8, I have illustrated a modification in the construct-ion of the supporting' plate for the garter which consists in providing plates 2S and 29 having lugs 30 and 3l formed thereon and secured together by rivets 32. The plates 2S and 29 have slots 33 through which the elastic band extends and are provided at their hinged ends with a series of teeth 34 which, when the plates are bent out of line with one another, permit a portion of the under garment to be inserted between the teeth and gripped thereby when the plates are swung back into their normal alinement. The tension of the elastic will hold the plates 28 and 29 in line with one another to grip the under garment and hold the garter in place.

Many persons cannot wear a hose supporter that depends on the pressure or tension of the garter or band on the leg to prevent the vhose from pulling' down the band sist the l i l or garter because of the great discomfort arising from such pressure. But under the present invention the band or garter may loosely encircle the leg with sullicient pressure to hold up folds in the drawers leg above the garter and yet not suliicient to redrawing strain of the hose to pull down the garter because the garter itself will be sustained not by its tension binding' on the leg' but by the gripping device which grips the undergarment or drawers leg'. In other words the garment gripping device which grips the drawers leg' at a point in line with supporting tension on the drawers leg above the band sustains the loosely apl plied band; the hose is supported by the fasl tening device carried by the loose band or garter which is supported by the garment gripping' device; and the band supports the undergarinent or drawers leg so as to prevent it from slipping below the garter or l band.

, I claim as my invention:

A hose supporter consisting of a band adapted to loosely encircle the leg to prevent folds in a drawers leg slipping below the Iband, a fastening device extending below l and supported from the band and adapt-ed to engage the hose below the band to support the hose from the band, and a gripping I device attached to the band and adapted to grip the drawers leg at a point in line with l supporting' tension on the drawers leg' above l the band to support the leg encircling band from the drawers leg, substantially as described.
