v Letters .Paten-t No. 97 ,914, dated December 14, 1869.1
11i/rnover QoNDENsINGcoLUMN FOR sTILLS.
` The Schedule referred to in these Letten-:Patent and making part of the same Be it known that'I, AMRosn HAzzARD, of the city and county of St. Louis, and i State of Missouri, r
have'invented a new and useful Improved Spirit-Condcnsing Column, of which the following is a full, clear, and'exact description, reference being had tothe annexed drawing, making apart of this specification, in
whicht l Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional elevation of my'invention. n i l l `Figure 2 represents a' transverse section at x y. i
` Similar letters indicate like parts. g This intention is an improvement upon the patent I of H. G. Dayton, February 16,1869.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus'forthe more thorough and rapid condensation of the vapors of the still thrown oli` in distillation.
The flake-stand A, iigs. 1 and 2, may be fitted directly to thetop of the still, andsecured by the flange t, and through the centre of'it is passed a column, B,
connected with the 4neck of thestill.
Surrounding B is a c0lnmn,-U, resting on legs, (t a', fig. 1, ou the bottom k of .the flake-stand, while'a close cap, fm, covers both Band C, as shown.
` Around' C, and resting on the bottomlf, is another column, I), `which opens, at the top, into a chamber,`
t, which makes a channel ventirely around D,as shown,Y
From R lead numerous fpipes, e e, fig. 1, 'c 61 e?,
Y 85e., fig. 2, connecting with the coil H at the bottom `of` the flake-stand. l n
By means of the 4pipe bille `stand is filled with water, which entirely surrounds the pipes e c, &c.,` and the l enclosed columns, though not brought in direct coni tact with any of the latter, except' D, though the dome n is'covered. This water can bedrawn oli', as desired, through (1,11', which are provided with suitable cocks. i
v At the bottom of D, opening, of course, into both C` and'D, is a pipe, p,whicl1 may be connectedA with the still, while, from the. coil H, extends a discharge pipe, connected with the'receiver. p
The flake-stand being filled with water, and the still putv in operaton,'the vapor passes up through B', strikes against m, then passes down G, thence up I),
till, striking against the dome ot, it is thrown down,
and passing into the pipes e el c2, &c., it enters the coil, and thence is drawn oil", in the form of liquid, into the receiver through S.
Thcarrows indicatethe course taken by the vapor.
When the vapor has reached the bottom of C, the low-wine and fusel-oil muy be 4drawn loff' through p, and again passed through the stll`,lwhile the high-wine vapors, uncondensed, pass on to the tubes c c, 85e.,
where, being condensed, they are still further cooledv by their passage through H.
1t is evident that the still may be kept working all d Ithe time, the process of drawing off the low-w`1nes causing no delay.
By this apparatus I obtain a vastly-increasedsur-` face of condensation; am enabled to free the vapors from deleterious substances, in their passage. through the condenser, while, atthe same time, the conversion of them `into a higher grade of wines is kept up Without cessation.
The caps m und fn. are in close contact, so that they water acts onA both. I do not, of course, claim any originality insur- `rounding the vapor-column with water, norl in having one column inside of another, 'siuceboth are wellknown devices, in common usegsbnt What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'lhercliambers B, O, and D, tubes cc,&c., coil H,
Water-jacket A, and pipe p, when arranged in ther manner described, for the -purpose set forth.
AMER-OSE HAZZARD.
