JACOB SPRINGER', OFLAN'CASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, SSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, A. G. FLINN, AND H. B. McNEAL, OF SAME PLACE.
Late-feraient: No'. 77,671, aan@ May 5, lacs,
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOB.. REGTIPYING SPIRITS.
ro ALL WHOM IT MAY ooNonRN:
Be it known that I, JACOB SPRINGER, of the city-of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedV a. new and useful Improvement in Tubs for Doubling'or Rectifying Spirits invDistilleriesr-and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear7 and exact description 'of the construction and operation of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making' a part of this specification, in which the connectingpipes, with the still, I, and the cooler or condensingftub, III, is shown. II, situated between the two, shows my improvements in place. I
The nature of my invention consists' in providing my tub .with three chambers, and means hfor heating the singiings before charging the lower chambers, lso as notsericusly, if at all, to check the continuons process of evaporation, and thereby save much in time and one-third the fuel usually expended in the use ofthe singles ohambered vessel in universal ilse.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, it is not 4necessary for me to describe theoperat'ion of washing, -mixi-n'gl the worts or wash, and process of distillation, as my improvement consists in the construction ofthe lvessel II, which 1 call the doubler or'doubling-tub, div idedinto three chambers, D E F. The dotted lines indicate the tube from the pump, by which the singlings or low-wines are pnt in the upper chamber, This has' a copper dome, H, which is heated from `the swans-neck, G, and steam in' the middle chamber, E. y
The conducting-pipe, 13, from chambcrE through I[*,-isA surrounded by a jacketor cylinder, to separate the colder contents orsinglingsin-F, to prevent condensation in the-pipe. This chamber F being charged and: heated to near the boiling-point, is ready to charge the'loiver chambers, E4 D, successively, by means of tubes 1'2, 11, and slide-valves S V. I also use the air-valves A V,.to guard against acollapse, and man-holes, M, to facilitate cleaning ont the lower and middle chambers, D E, in which appliances I claim no novelty.
To provide an outlet, in case the lcontents in the upper chamber should come to a full boiling-heat, I have .a pipe, 6, that conveys any vapor formed, over into .the beer, in the chamber C vof the still I. This prevents l any waste of material. l
The use of the connecting-pipes 9, I, and 13 is well understood, and common'. But I am not aware that a dome, H, or its equivalent, for heating an upperchamberinl the doubling-tub was ever before used inthe manner shown. It (the doubler) also answersthe purpose of concentrating the spirits from the still, as well as from the singlinggns they mingle, through the medium of 'the vconnectingpipes, from one to the other, in the general combination. This upper chamber for heating the singlings before charging not only 'saves time and fuel, but has other advantages, for when the snglings are conveyed from the pump to the bottom of a singlechambered tub, there-is a.4 great tendency 'to clog thc pipes by the mixed'wa'sh being blown into them.'
- When all the point-s are duly considered, and compared with the old process, they will be found to present highly-important features of improvement, the adoption of which will be a greatsaving,l and produce the moet satisfactory results.
What I claim as my invention, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- l The construction and arrangement of the doubling-tub, with-its three chambers, ID E F, copper or metallic heating-dome H, or its equivalent, in combination with the pipes 5, 6, 11, and 12, arranged substantially in the 'manner and fr the purpose specified. v
