Specification of Letters Patent.

Application-filed May 12, 1910. Serial No. 560,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD CooLrDGE FLEMIE e, a citizen of the United States, residing in IVatertown, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part thereof.
rlhe objects of my invention are to provide a simple device, easily attached to the frame of indoor, and adapted to check and prevent the banging of a door in closing, together with other objects which will be set forth in the specification.
In the drawings which accompany this specification and form a part thereof-Figure 1 represents my device attached to sections of a door and door frame; Fig. 2 is a section of a frame of a door and the door with my device attached, with the door closed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the operating portion of my improved door check, showing the checking pawl engaging the notch for checking Vthe forcible closing of `the door; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of my device taken through line 4 4, Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 1 represents a section of a door frame; 2 the rabbet or recess made to receive the edges of the door; 3 a section of a door. The plate 4 is attached to the frame of the door just inside the rabbet or recess to receive the edge of the door, by the screws 5, 5, etc. The swinging door check 6 is pivoted to the plate 4 by t-he pivot screw 9; and 7 is a spring member secured in the swinging door check 6, provided at its outer end with the curved portion 8 which presents a surface to slip easily upon the door. The stops or pins 10, 10, are secured in the plate 4, their purpose being to limit the swinging movement of the swinging door check 6; 11 represents a notch cut in the lower face of the swinging door check 6; and 12 is an angular projection on the lower edge of the swinging check 6, the purpose of which will be explained in connection with the swinging pawl 13 which is pivoted to the plate 4 by a pivot screw 14. The pawl 13 is providedwith the angular portion 15 rounded on the end, and adapted to contact with the angular portion 12 of the swinging check 6. The end 16 of the pawl 18 is shaped to lit the notch 11.
The operation of my improved door check is as fo-llows:-The weight of the spring 17 tends to hold the swinging member 6 in a downward position in contact with the stop 10, as shown in Fig. 1. Should the door 3 swing forcibly inward, it will contact with the curved end S of the spring 7, and forcibly throw the swinging member 6 upwardly. rI`his forcible throwing of the swinging member 6 upwardly causes the angular portion 12- to violently contact with the angular portion 15 and throw the point 16 upwardly to engage in the notch 11, thus preventing the door from swinging into place in the recess 2, and cushion it by means of the flexibility of the spring 7. The .door will rebound slightly from the spring 7 and allow the swinging check 6 to swing downwardly against the stop 10. When the door again contacts with the curved end 8 it will make a slow Contact so that the point 12 will swing by the angular portion 15 without throwing the point 16 of the pawl upwardly enough to catch in the notch 1l. This movement allows the check 6 to swing upwardly and permit the door to close, as is shown in Fig. 2.
I do not desire to limit myself to the form of the device as shown in the drawings, as modifications of the spring member and plate may be made; in fact the forms of the parts may be materially changed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a door check, a plate; a swinging door check pivoted to the plate; a spring member secured to said swinging door check; and means to engage a notch in said swinging door check to momentarily interrupt its inward swinging movement.
2. In a door check, a plate adapted to be secured to the frame of a door; a swinging door check pivoted to said plate; stops secured in said plate to limit the swinging movement of said door check; a spring secured to the outer end of said swinging door check; and means mounted on the plate to cooperate with the swinging door check to momentarily prevent the swinging movement of said swinging door check should the door forcibly contact with the spring inember.
3. In a door check, a plate; a swinging door check pivoted to the plate; a spring member secured to said door check; stops to limit the swinging movement of said door my hand, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, this the 28th day of April, A. D. 1910.
