To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS F. WEIHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Shade Supports, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in holders to be applied to window-casings for supporting and permitting the correct operation of the usual spring-rollers carrying window-shades, and said invention consists in the novel features and structure .hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The shade-roller holders of my invention are particularly adapted for application to wooden window-casings, and among the advantages of the invention it may be mentioned that my holders permit of a very convenient and ready application of the shaderoller to position, that they support the roller forwardly of the front edges of the usual removable stop-beads and thereby provide for an increased space between the shade and window-sash for the passage of air, that by reason of their position they admit of the use of wider shades than can be applied to windows whose roller-supports are nailed to the faces of the stop-beads and compel the use of shades less in width than the distance between the facing sides of said beads, and that they may be firmly secured to the window-casings without being nailed or screwed thereto.
The shade-roller holders of my invention are each preferably in one integral piece of sheet metal, preferably steel, and they may be constructed to support two shades or only one shade as may be desired.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view, partly broken away, of the upper portion of a windowcasing equipped with the holders of my invention and two shaderollers supported thereby. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the shade-rollers being omitted. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of one of the holders, the holderl shown being the one to rcceive the end-studs rigidly connected with the rollers and intended to rotate therewith; Fig.
4 is a vertical section through a portion of the Wlndow-casing and one of the shade supports on the dotted line 1 /1 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of my shade-roller holder as it will be constructed when intended to support only one roller.
In the drawings, l() designates the sides of the window casing, 11 the usual removable facing stop-beads or strips secured thereto, 12 the lintel strip or bead whose ends match the upper ends of said stopbeads, 13 one of the shade-roller holders, 14 the other or companion shade-roller holder', 15 the shade-rollers, 1G the shades .ther-con, 17 the polygonal studs connected with the usual springmechanisms of said rollers, and 1S the cylindrical end-studs which are rigid withthe rollers and rotate therewith.
The window casing and the shade-rollers and shades are of customary character and require no special description.
The holders 13, 14 in their construction and combination with the window-casing and shade-roller or rollers embrace the novel features of my invention. Each of the holders 13 14 is in one integral strip or plate of meta preferably sheet steel, bent into the required form for immediate application to the windmv-casing, and said holders correspond in construction with each other except that the holder 13 is adapted to receive and prevent rotation of the polygonal end studs 17 of the rollers, while the holder 14taffords bearings for the end studs 18 of the rollers and provides for their rotation with the rollers. The holders 13, 1/1 have, each, upper and lower arms or parts 19, 2() held between a stop-bead 11 and side 10 of the window-casing, vertical shoulders 21. to engage the inner edge of said stopbead and aline the holder therewith, a tooth 22 on the arm 20 to be driven into the inner side of the stop-bead, a laterally and downwardly extending hook-flange 23 at the upper edge of the arm 19 to hook over the upper end of the stop-bead, a tooth 241v on said flange 23 to be driven into the upper end of the stop-bead, and a plate-section 25 extending inwardly or toward the room and formed with laterally projected box-like portions QG affording bearings for the end studs on the slnule-rollers. The box-like portions 26 of the holder 123 have formed in them vertical slots or recesses 27 open at their upper ends to receive the polygonal studs 17 on the shade-rollers, and said studs when in said slots Vor recesses are held against rotation. of the holder 14 have round bearing apertures 2S to receive the cylindrical rollerstuds 18 and permitV the same to rotate therein. The holders 13, 14 are recessed or cut away between the arms 19, 20, as at 29, so that the box-like sections 26 may be conveniently pressed laterally from the platesections 25. The shoulders 21 are preferably formed by outward folds in the plates from which the holders 13, 14 are constructed. The holders 13, 14 are securely held in position by the clamping of their arms 19, 20 between the sides 10 of the window-casing and the stop-beads 11, the provision of the hook-flanges 23, the engagement of the teeth 22,24 with the stop-beads and the bearing of the shoulders 21 against the edges of said beads.- The weight of the shades and their rollers has a natural tendency to drive the lower ends of the holders 13, 14 outwardly or in a direction from theroom and this force is eifectually overcome by the engagement of the shoulders 21 with the edges of the beads 11. The holders 13,` 14 are sustained against downward movement by the hook-flanges 23 and beads 11, and are prevented from having any upward movement by the engagement of the outerV ends of the lintel-strip 12 vwith the upper surfaces of said flanges, said strip 12 also aiding in maintaining the holders 13, 14 in firm vertical position.
l/Vhen the holders are intended to support a single shade-roller they will be formed with only one box-like section to receive the roller end-studs, as will be understood from Fig. 5 without detailed description. Whether the shade-roller holders are intended to receive one roller 'or two rollers, I preferably provide the holders 13 with spring-latches 30 for locking the polygonal studs 17 of the rollers in the slots 27 of said holders. The latch 30 is a piece of spring metal preferably of inverted T-shape riveted to the holder 13 and having its cross-bar portion within the section 26 and crossing the slot 27 therein. The latch 30 yields to the pressure of the stud 17 when the latter is applied to the slot 27 and thereafter springs to its initial position closing the end of said slot and locking the stud 17 therein. The roller is by means of the latch 3() prevented, on any rough handling of the window-shade, from becoming dislodged from the holder 13, and in addition the latch 30 enables the holder to be applied to the lower end of the window-casing when a shaderoller is desired in that location, the holder being then inverted in positionY and hooked under the lower end of the stop-bead. The holder 13 is shown as applied to the upper end of the left-hand stop-bead but in case The box-like portions 26 a roller should be required or desired at the lower end of the window, said holder 13, without change therein, would be applied to the lower end of the right hand stop-bead,
the latch 30 then serving to close the thenl lower end of the slot 27 and, at its cross-bar,
support'the polygonal stud 17 of theA roller.
What I claim as my invention and desire Y Yto secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with a window-casing, shade-roller holders therefor each comprising a metal plate having an arm between'a stop-bead and a side of said casing, an upper member hooked overthe upper end, of said?- stop-bead and an inwardly extending platesection having a box-like portion Aaffording a bearing for a stud at the end of the roller,
one holder in its box-like portion being slot-h n ted to receive the polygonal stud of the-- roller spring-mechanism and the other holderV in its box-like portion having a bearing for the usual end-stud rigidly connected with the roller; substantiallyV as set forth.V
2. In combination with a 'window-casing,"1l
shade-roller holders therefor each comprising a metal plate having an arm between a stop-bead and a side of said casing, an upper member hooked over the upper end ofm said stop-bead and an inwardly extending plate-section having a box-like portion affording a bearing for a studat the end of the roller, one holder m its box-like portion being slotted to receive the polygonal studA of the roller spring-mechanism andthe other holder in its box-like portion having a bearing for the usual end-stud rigidly connectedy with the roller, and said upper member and Y said arm of each holder having a tooth to be driven into the stop-bead contiguous thereto; substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with a window-casing,
shade-roller holders therefor each compris-p ing a metal plate having an arm between a stop-bead and a side of said casing, an up-V per member hooked over the upper end of said stop-bead, a flange engaging the inner edge of the stop-bead and an inwardly extendin plate-section having a box-like portion a portion being slotted to receive the polygonal stud of the roller spring-mechanism and the other holder in its box-like portion having a bearing for the usual end-stud rigidly? Ording a bearing for a stud at the end of the roller, one holder in its box-like isoY like portion being slotted to receive the polygonal stud of the roller spring-mechanism and the other holder in its box-like portion having a bearing for the usual end-stud rigidly connected with the roller; substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a window-casing, shade-roller holders therefor each compris ing a metal plate having upper and lower arms between a stop-bead and a side of the casing, upper and lower vertical flanges along said arms engaging the edge of the stop-bead, an upper member hooked over the upper end of said stop-bead and an inwardly extending plate-section having a box-like portion affording a bearing for a stud at the end of the roller, one holder in its box-like portion being slot-ted to receive the polygonal stud of the roller springmechanism and the other holder in its boxlike portion having a bearing for the usualsection having upper and lower box-like portions affording bearings for the studs at the corresponding ends of the rollers, one holder in its box-like portions being slotted to receive the polygonal studs of the roller spring-mechanisms and the other holder in its box-like ortions having bearings for the usual enc -studs rigidly connected with the rollers; substantially as set forth.
7. In combination with a window casing, shade roller holders therefor each comprising a metal plate having an arm between a stop-bead and a side of said casing, a meinber hooked on the end of said stop-bead and an inwardly extending late section having a box-like portion atforc ing a bearing for a stud at. the end of the roller, one holder in its box-like portion being slotted to receive the polygonal stud of the roller s )ring mechanism, and provided with a sprlng-latch to lock said stud in said slot7 and the other holder in its box-like portion having a bearing for the usual end stud rigidly connected with the roller; substantially as set forth.
