COMPOUND 'rooL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DON A. MODRALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Robert Lee, in the county of Coke and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Compound Tool, of which the following is a specification.
The improved device forming the subject matter of this application for Letters- Patent is a compound tool of pliers type, and the invention consists in the location and configuration of the parts of the tool, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
It is the object of the invention to provide the component elements thereof are united for operation, in a novel and improved manner.
The drawings illustrate but one form of the invention, and it is to be understood that, within the scope of what hereinafter is claimed, divers changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the structure may be made, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawm s.
Tn the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, shows my invention in side elevation, parts being broken away to better illustrate the structure; Fig. 2, is a detailed perspective of that portion of the tool which lies adj acent the pivotal connection between the handles; Fig. 3, is an end elevation of the head of the tool; Fig. 4, is an elevation showing the opposite end of the head of the tool from that depicted in Fig. 3; Fig. 5, is a detailed perspective, showing the extremity of one of the handles; Fig. 6, is a top plan of a portion of the head of the tool; Fig. 7, is a detailed perspective of the end of the extension which is adapted to be mounted upon the portion of the tool shown in Fig. Fig. 8, is aside elevation of the extremity of one of the handles; Fig. 9, is an elevation of a portion of the device adjacent the head, and designed to show in detail the wire cutter.
In carrying out my invention, there is provided a pair of pivotally connected han dles denoted by the numerals 1 and 2. The handles 1 and 2 are provided, respectively, I with hubs 3 and 4, the hubs 3 and4being pro- 1 Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with laterally extending arms 5 and 6, a pivotal element 7 being passed through the hubs, to hold the component members of the device together. The adjacent faces of the handles 1 and 2 are provided, in the vicinity of the pivotal connection, respectively, with notches 8 and 38, the notch 38 being a cutting element whereby threads may be fashioned upon bolts and the like, and the member 8 being a swage or former, whereby mutilated threads upon a bolt may be restored to their original, condition. Below the element 8, the handle 1 is provided with an inwardly extending, pointed prong 9, which is adapted to register in an opening 10 in the handle 2. This element 9 serves as a punch whereby holes may be made in leather and the like, and at the same time, through the cooperation of the elements 9 and 10, the jaws 39 may be limited against lateral movement when the tool is in use, should the pivot element 7 wear loose in its seat.
Located upon the adjacent faces of the handles 1 and 2 below the members 9 and 10, are semi-circular openings 37 arranged to cooperate to grasp a round object, such as a pipe or rod, to serve as pipe tongs.
The handle 1 terminates at its lower end in a shank 14, which is denoted by the numeral 15, and is adapted to serve as a tap whereby threads may be cut in a pipe, nut, or the like. A member 16 is provided, preferably rectangular in cross section, and having an axial opening 17 to receive the shank 14, the member 16 constituting an extension for the handle 1.
In order that the extension 16 may be retained upon the shank 14, the extension and the shank are providedwith cooperating, interlocking elements, which in the present instance take the form of a pin 18 which is radially inserted into the shank 14 adjacent the end of the handle 1 and a slot 19 in the extension 16, adapted to receive the pin 18. This slot 19 as shown in Figs. 1 and 7 is rec tangular in form intersecting one of the side faces of the extension 16, and the end face thereof, and communicating with the axial opening 17. The pin 18 will traverse the upright portion of the slot 19, and, when the member 16 is rotated to aline its side face with the side face of the handle 1, the pin 18 will register in the transversely disposed portion of the slot 19, thus holding the parts together.
Adjacent its end, the handle 1 is provided,
with a compartment in which is slidably mounted a locking pin 20, extending through the end face of the handle 1, and adapted to register in an opening 24 in the end face of the member 16 to lock the member 16 against rotation upon the shank 14. This locking pin 20 is provided with a stud 23 which extends through a slot in a plate 22 mounted upon the face of the handle 1, and in order to hold the end of the locking pin 20 in nor mal projection beyond the end of the'memher 1, a compression spring 21 is provided, located in the compartment, beneath the plate 22. It is obvious that the stud 23 is adapted to be engaged bythe fingers to withdraw the end of the locking pin 20 from the opening 24 in order that the member .16 may be rotated.
The handle 2 terminates in an alligator wrench 25 one jaw of which is extended as denoted by the numeral 27, and provided with a bit which may be adapted for use as a. screw driver or as a chisel. The ex tremity of the extension 16 terminates in a wrench 26, and it is obvious that when the member 16 is removed from the handle 1, the wrench 26 may be employedto engage the nut, to rotate thesame upon the portion 15, of the shank, to thread the nut. The portion 27of the handle 2isprovided with an opening 28 adapted'to receive the terminal of a fence wire whereby, when the pertions and Get the device: are seized and the handles 1 and 2 rotated, the wire may be wrapped around the handles of the tool to stretch the wire. The arm 6 teri'ninates in a hammer head 29 provided with a claw 3 and the hubs 3 and 4: are provided with notches 31, adapted to serveas wire cutters, the adjacent edgesof the note-hes uponone side of the tool being disposed asat 31 to cut a wire diagonally.
Byreferring to FigxG, it will beseen that the extremities of aws 39 are provided with upright grooves 32, defining between them a lug 33, the elements 32 and 33 being adapted to cooperate as a staple puller. The end face of the arm 5 is provided with depression 3a which is adapted to serve as a bradder and with a smooth opening 36 which is adapted to serve as a rivet set. As denoted by the numerals 38 and 8; the notches 3S and 8 are duplicated in the jaws 39, the constructions and functions of the members 38 and 8 being the same as those of the members 38 and 8.
From the foregoing it will be noted that I have combined in a single implement, a large variety of different tools, many of which are cooperatively related to each other in the manipulation of the device.
Having thus described-the invention what is claimed is A tool having a handle consisting of separable parts, one of which is terminally provided with a tapping device, there being an'axial opening in the other part for the reception of the tapping device, and an angular slot therein, communicatingwith the opening and extended through the end wall of said part; a pin radially mounted in the tapping device and arranged to be introduced into the slot to hold the said handle parts together; and a slidably mounted, spring-actuated locking pin, disposed in one of said parts and arranged to engage the other part to hold the parts against rotation with respect to each other.
