JAMES R. ANDREWS AND JOSEPH W. WALDR-UM, F SHERMAN, TEXAS; SAID WALDRUM ASSIG-NOR T0 CLYDE LUCAS, OF SHERMAN, TEXAS.
BARREL-COVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J AMES R. ANDREWS and JOSEPH IV. YVALDRUM, citizens of the United States, residing at Sherman, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers for barrels, and its object is to provide an adjust able closure which can be quickly placed in position upon any barrel that has been opened, and through Which, when on the barrel, the contents can be observed, also protected from dust; access to the contents can be had, when desired, by lifting a section or portion of the top or lid of the cover.
The invention consists in providing an annular rim that is secured to the top of the barrel and having a lid hinged to the same, together with other novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a barrel having the cover attachment connected thereto and the lid closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the lid open; Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the cover and barrel, the lid being closed; Fig. d is a bottom view of the cover; and Fig. 5 is a top view in detail of a securing band.
Referring to the figures by letters of reference, A represents a split band having its ends outturned as at B, to which is secured a spiral spring C whereby the ends B are drawn together so as to contract the band and cause it to clamp around the barrel. A series of prongs a extend inward from the band and are for the purpose hereinafter described. Secured pivotally to the band by rivets are upstanding metal strips D; a circular rim E having an opening F in the center thereof is mounted upon the strips and connected thereto by hinges Gr. To the top side of rim E is secured by hinges H a lid I; it has a central opening conforming to that of F, which opening is preferably closed by means of a glass J secured within the opening in any desired manner. In
Specification of Letters Patent.

order to effect a dust proof joint, the lower face of the lid I is provided with a cloth or rubber strip K, and the lower face of the rim E with a strip L of the same material.
In using the device herein described the band A is dropped over the upper portion of a barrel M and forced below the upper hoop thereof as shown in Figs. l and 2. The
spiral spring C permitting of sufficient ad-.
justment of the band to adapt the cover to different sizes of barrels, and the spring will force the prongs a into the barrel upon which the cover will then rest, and when in closed position the contents will be plainly visible through the glass lid J. IVhen it is desired to remove any of the contents, the lid I is raised as shown in Fig. 2, and the prongs will be found of great utility as retainers for the rim, because they will engage the barrel and positively hold the rim against displacement.
The cover is especially adapted for use in stores and other places where a barrel is opened and its contents dispensed from time to time, as said contents will not be exposed to the action of air and dust, and their aroma will be preserved.
Having thus described our invention, what we esteem as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
As a new article of manufacture, a barrel cover comprising a rim having a hinged lid mounted thereon7 spaced hinges secured to the under side of said rim adjacent its edge, depending strips secured tothe free leaves of said hinges, a split band pivotally connected to the lower ends of said strips, vsaid band being provided with out-turned angled apertured ends, a coiled spring having its ends secured in the apertures of said ends connecting the free ends of said band, and spaced inwardly projecting prongs formed on the inner face of said band forengaging the barrel on which the cover is arranged.
In testimony whereof we aiiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES It. ANDREWS. JOSEPH W. IVALDRUM.
Titnesses 2 J. B. MAY, IV. R. BRENTS.
