'WILLIAM H. SMITH, or'NnWronr, RHODE ISLAND.
` Letters .Iaten-t No. 97,716, dated December@ 1.869.
s 4It/mnovnn noo-1' `AND' suon-CLEANER.
The Schedule reterred to in these Letters Patent ands, making part of the same. -v
To'all 'whom tt may concern;-
` ne a known that I, WILLIAM H. 'sM1TH,-0f Newport, in the .eountylof Newport, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new'and improved Boot and j, Shoe-Cleaner; and I do hereby declare that the fol- I lowing is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, hadto the accompanying drawings,
reference being lnakingpart of this specification', in which- Figure 1 is a perspective vewof the improved boot and shoe-cleanerr Figure 2 is atop view of the cleaner, with a portionotv one of the rotary brush-shields broken away,
` Similar letters ot' .reference indicate corresponding parts in` both figures. y
The nature of my invention consistsv First, iiI combining, with `a rotary corrugated drum,-
" two upright rotary brush-drums, in such manner,.that
in .the act of drawing the foot over the corrugated drum, this drumwill turn, and at the same time, give rotary motion to the upright brushes, which willrclean the sides of the ,boot `or shoe, as will be hereinafter explained.
Second, in colnbining, with said rotary vdrum and rotary brushes, a `scraperand a fixed brusl1,which will' `clean the bottom` of a boot while the rotarybrushes clean thesides thereof, .as will be Vhereinafter ex pla-ined.
ATo enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction andV op- Iirtheacconlpanyingdrawings- A Afrepresents thenbase-plate of `.the chamber, which `is flat onvtop, and preferably madeofcast-metal.
B represents a rotary cylinder, which hasV itsperiphery corrugated, 'sei-rated, or roughened, inv any suitable manner, and `is supported lat both' ends by short forked standards b, rising ,perpendicular 'from ,and secured rigidly to the base-plate A.
On thcextr'emit-ies of the shaftA of cylinder AB, lievelled-spur wheels gfg are keyed, which 'engage with 'corresponding Wheels g', on vertical shafts e.
The shafts e have their bearings in `the o'sets of `standards l), and carry brush-drulns E, arranged in such relation to theeuds of the cylinder B, that when a person draws his foot across the latter, and rotates it, the brushes E E will'be rotated, and will clean the sides ofthe boot. l s V On onev side of the cylinder B, and secured fast to 4the bed A, is a convex brush, D, and onthe opposite side of said cylinder is a scraper-plate. O, which' is also secured fast to the bed A. 1
It will be seen. that during the act of drawing the foot over cylinder B, and .brushing the side por sides of the boot,l the scraper G and brush D will clean ythe bottom of the boot.
I am aware that laterally-movable elastic or yielding brushes, ibn-cleaning the sides of a boot, have been combined with brushes and scrapersfor cleanf ing the bottom of a boot, and I lay no claim to such combination; nor dol claim, broadly, the use of cylindrical rotary brushes.; I have combined a corrugated orroughened cylinder o r driver with rotarybrushes,
in such manner that the act of' moving the foot beetweeu the rotary b rushes upon the said driver, causes the brushes to rotate. l. Having ldescribed my invention,4
What I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. The upright rotary. brushes, geared andv combined with the cylindrical corrugated driver B, as and for the .purposes described. s
2,. The scraper O, and brush D, in combination with brushes E, and their driving-cylinder B,as described..
