Description

UNITEDv STATES PATENT GEEICE.
cALEE BATES, or KINGSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,917, dated May 30, 1865.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CALEB BATES, of Kingst0n, in the county of Plymouth, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and" useful Improvement in Apparatus for Applying Ink and Paint to Stencil-Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the` accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of a vertical section of an apparatus made according to my invention, the line of section being seen at a: x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an under side view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in an apparatus for applying paint or ink to stencil-plates by means of a revolving brush, to whose surface the paint is applied from a hopper, the brush and hopper being carried upon a truck, which is made to travel over the stencil-plate, and the brush being revolved by means of gear- `ing, which is connected to one of the shafts of supported upon wheels E E, of smaller diameter, whose shaft is carried upon a frame, G, which can be adjusted to different heights by means of a screw, e, passing down through the front of the truck. The frame G is hinged to the under side of the frame of the truck at about `the middle of the length of the truck.
I I are two `segmental plates, whose convex edges are fixed by soldering or other suitable means to the forward part of the interior of the cover J. The said plates are so placed that their sides are nearer together in the highest part of the box, and beneath the hopper A, than at their ends, where the brush is received between them and where it leaves them.
The hopperA is placed above the cover J directly over that point Where the sides of the plates I come nearest to each other. Its bottom is perforated at c, and the perforation is closed by a valve-rod, a, which passes upward through the cover of the hopper. One side of the cover of the hopper is hinged.
b is a cross-piece set in the hopper to guide the valve-rod.
The office of the plates I is to compress the brush as it revolves between them, and to cause them to present a comparatively compact mass opposite the perforation@ of the hopper, so that the paint which issues thence will be received and kept upon the periphery of the brush, and be there retained long enough to be well and evenly distrbutedupon the ends of the bristles or hairs of the brush without being allowed to pass between them toward the center of the brush. The convex edges of the plates are united by a curved plate from the point 2, wherethey leave the top of the cover, to their hinder ends, with .which plate the periphery of the brush may The operation of the apparatus is as fol-` lows: A stencil being laid on the surface to be marked, the truck is placed thereon, the
operator pushing it along and controlling it` by its handle B. The frame Gis raised or lowered, so as to bring the brush to the proper position. The wheels of the truck tread down the plate snug as the brush is advanced over it. The shaft of the brush is so geared as that it shall have a high velocity, by means of which the paint or ink is kept well out on the points or ends of the bristles, while the direction of their motion, which is indicated by the arrow, lifts the paint or ink out of the open spaces of the stencils and prevents it from piling and lodging against their edges, thereby preventing the spreading of the paint or ink, be it ever so thin.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The apparatusfherein set forth for applying paint or ink to stencils, constructed and operated substantially as above described.
2. The plates I, for compressing the brush at the time it receives paint or ink from the hopper, substantially as above described.
Witnesses: GALEB BATES.
