Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 10, 1907. Serial No. 378,146.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES M. NICAFEE, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Devices for Roller-Wills, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe object of my invention is to .provide improved means for delivering the grain or stock to the feed rolls in thin continuous sheets without danger of clogging.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed ont in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a grinding mill embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the floor or feed plate between the feed rolls.
In the drawing, Q represents the case of the mill have grinding rolls 3 and 4, and feed rolls 5 and 6 located above the grinding rolls, as usual in machines of this type. l spout 7 leads into the upper part of the casing and a floor 8 is arranged between the feed rolls above the said spout and is inclined downwardly from the center toward each side, the edges of the floor being near the feed rolls but a sufficient distance therefrom to allow a slight lateral movement of the floor. Flexible plates 9 of rubber, leather or other suitable material are secured to the edges of the floor and contact with the feed rolls t0 close the gap between them and allow the floor to move laterally with respect to said rolls. Plates 10 are secured to the casing of the mill and have slots 11, and thumb screws l2 pass therethrough, by means of which the said plates can be adjusted vertically on the mill frame. Rods 13 are pivotally connected to the plates 10 and extend down to and are attached to eye-bolts lil in the four corners of the floor. By adjusting the plates 10 the floor can be raised or lowered to vary its position with respect to the feed rolls. Above the floor on each side 0f the spout gates 15 are provided having rods 1G that are vertically adjustable in guides 17 and secured therein by thumb screws 18. The guides are mounted on the wall of the feed spout. By means of these gates the feed opening can be regulated and the delivery of the material to the feed rolls controlled.
A bar 19 is provided on the under side of the floor and a bell crank 20 is pivoted at 2l on a bracket 22 that is secured to the machine casing and has one arm mounted on a pivot pin 23 on the bar 19. The other arm projects outwardly beyond the casing of the machine and is attached to a connecting rod A that is operated from an eccentric 25 on a feed .roll shaft 2G. On the other side of the machine a link 27 is provided pivotally connecting a fixed bracket 2S 011 the machine frame with a pivot pin 29 in the bar 19. These pivot pins 29 and 23 are loose in their sockets in the link 9.7 and the arm ot' the bell crank to permit the vertical adjustment of the floor 8. lVhen the bell crank Q0 is oscillated the floor S will be moved lengthwise on the are described by the said bell crank and this movement will have the effect of spreading the material on the l'loor, out in a thin sheet thereon, and there will be su'llicient lateral movement to feed the material toward the rolls and prevent it from clogging under the gates or at the point where it passes over the flexible plates.
The lloor may be operated at any desired speed suitable for a machine of this kin,d and the combined longitudinal and lateral movement imparted to it by the oscillating bell crank will increase the etiiciency and capacity of the machine to a considerable degree and obviate the danger of the material becoming clogged at the edges of the floor.
I claim as my invention:
The combination, with a casing having a feed spout, of feed rolls mounted in said casing, a feed floor provided between said rolls and inclined dmvnwardly from the center toward each side, there being sufficient space between the edges of said floor and said rolls to permit lateral oscillation of said floor, flexible plates mounted on said floor and bearing on said feed rolls and closing the gap between said rolls and floor, and means for imparting a combined longitudinal and lateral movement to said licor, substantially as described.
