To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jesse M. PAYNE, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at The primary object of the invention is the production of an apparatus by means ofwhich a uniform dyeing of the yarn may be secured.
A further object of the invention is the production of an apparatus for dyeing yarn, whereby a forced circulation of the dyeing liquor through the yarn from the interior to the exterior of said yarn and the reversing of the circulation of the liquor, whereby it will flow from the exterior to -the interior of the yarn is secured.
A still further object of this invention is the production of an apparatus of this kind comprising the combination of a warper beam, a plurality of conduits connected therewith, a vat for said warper beanr and means for forcing the dyeing liquor through the warper beam, whereby the liquor may be made to pass through the yar twound on said beam by first passing through the center of said beam into the vat, or whereby the circulation may be reversed. and the liquor caused to flow from the outside of the beam to the interior thereof and thence back to the circulation producing means.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammaticsectional view showing an apparatus for dyeing yarn embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the .line 2-2.of Fig. 1, and

In the drawings,1.designates a vat which is preferably constructed of wood and is suitably provided with the bottomopening 2 and end openings 3 and 1, respectively. A casing 5 is supported within the vat and is provided in one of its ends withi the opening arranged to communicate with the openfipecification of Letters Patent.

The warper beam 8 comprises a pair of heads 8 and 8 between which is arranged an annular series of spaced rods, slats orother suitable yarn supports 8 The head 8 is formed with a pair of vertically alined openings 9 and 10 adapted to receive dyeing fluid passed through the opening into the vat. The head 8 of th warper beam is also provided with an annular shoulder 8 which fits in a corresponding recess in one end of the casing 5. A packing rug 8 may be placed in said recess to 1IISI1))G ya perfect air-tight engagement between tzne shoulder and easing which causes the dyeing fluid to flow directly into the space between the rods or bars 8 A liquor pipe 11 communicates with the opening 2 in the bottom of the vat 1 and is provided with a manually-operated valve 12, the opposite end of said pipe being connected with a pressure pum 13. A vertical pipe 1 1 is connected with t e pump 13 and is in turn connected with a horizontal pipe 15 which extends from the pump 13 toward the vat. The pipe 15 just referred to is placed in communication with the opening 1 in the vat 1 by a branch pipe 16. The branch pipe 16 is provided with a valve 17 and is connected as at 18, with a vertical pipe 19 equipped with a valve 20. The pipe 19 extends somewhat above the vat 1 and is provided with a alve 21 and with a downwardly curved end 22 which is so disposed as to discharge the dye liquor into the vat 1. A. vertical pipe 23 connects the pipe 15-with the pipe 11 and is provided with a valve 2 1. A- horizontally disposed pipe 25 connects with the vertically disposed pipe 23, and extends through the opening 3 formed in the vat 1 and an opening 26 formed in the casing 5. Dye liquor is supplied to the vat 1 and to the pump 13 by the tank 29, connected by a supply pipe '30 and a vertically disposed pipe 31 having connections with pipes 11 and 15,- and the supply pipe 30 is supplied with a manually-operate valve 32, and the pipe31 with manually-operated valves 33' and 34 located on opposite sides of the point of connection between the supply pipe 30 and branch pipe 31.

In practice, the yarn to be dyed is wound upon the warper beam 8, and subsequent to this operation, the cover 6 is securedover the casing 5 and the warper beam secured in rigid position in said casing by means of the clamping device 5, or small jaclg screw, as shown. The packing ring 8 will thus be compressed betweenthe end of the beam and the end of the casing so that the liquid pumped in through the opening 7 will be forced to pass through the openings 9 and I of pipe 19 back into 10 into the interior of the beam and the casing. The head of the casing is constructed to provide an enlarged recess or chamber to accommodate the securing nut on the end of the deflection in the course of the flow at this point producing a choking of the openings through the end of the beam. When the apparatus is not in use, all of the valves are preferably closed and when it use the machine, the dye liquor is forced through pipes 14, 15 and 16 and through the opening 4 into the interior of the warper beam 8.. The dye liquor under the pressure produced by the pump 13 is caused to pass through the yarn wound upon the warper beam into the casing 5 out of which it passes into the pipe 25 which extends through the opening 3 in the vat. The dye liquorpasses from the pipe 25 through the pipe 27 and pipe 19, back into the vat. After the dye liquor has passed in the course above'described, the direction of flow is reversed and said liquor caused to How through pipes 14:, 15, 23 and 25 and through opening 26 into the casing 5. The liquor then flows through the yarn wound upon the war-per beam into the interior of the latter and passes out through pipes 16,19and 22 into the vat l and from the vat back to the. pump or other circ'ulationproducing means through the pipe 11. I When the dye liquor is caused to flow in the course first described; the valves 12,17, 21 and 28 are open, while the valves 24- 32-33-34, 20 and 15 are closed and when the dye liquor is flowing in the reverse direction, the valves 17 24328334-, and 28 are closed and valves 12-21, 20 and 15 open. From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is The improved yarn dyeing apparatus herein described and shown comprisin a vat, a horizontally disposed casing wit iin the vat having an enlarged chambered end, a warper beam disposed horizontally within the casing and provided at one end with openings adapted to register with the chambered portion of the end. of the casing, a packing ring between said end of the casing and the adjacent end of the beam, means interposed between the opposite end of the casing and the beam to secure the beam and compress said packing ring, a pipe leading through the end of the vat and the casing and having a branch leading over the. vat and terminating above the same, a pipe leading from the bottom of the casing and having a branch connected with the first mentioned branch, a pipe leading from the bottom of the vat and having a branch connected with the pipe leading from the bottom of the casing, a pump, and connections between the pump andthe several pipes.
