Dyeing.-A machine for dyeing cotton yarn &c. comprises an open vat 1 in which stands a hollow jacket in two sections 2, 6, preferably semi-cylindrical, and containing a warper-beam ; mechanism is provided for circulating the dye through the yarn on the beam from within outwards, or in the reverse direction. The movable upper section 6 of the jacket is, when in use, suitably clamped to the bottom section 2 by means of the corresponding outside flanges 7, 4. The warper-beam preferably used consists of a shaft 16, collars 17 fixed near its ends, circular beam-heads 19 with reduced parts 20 on their inner faces, nuts 20 working on screwthreads 18 to hold the heads 19 against the collars, and yarn-holding rods 23 held between the heads with their ends in a series of sockets 22 in the reduced parts 20. The warper-beam is first carried by means of the extended ends 24 of the shaft 16 to a beamer and wound with yarn. It is then placed in the jacket, the heads fitting in inwardly-extending spaced flanges 5 of the sections thereof, and a threaded plug 39 is unscrewed from its aperture in the upper section 6. A pump and system of pipes and valves then enables the following steps to take place : dye liquor is drawn from the vat 1 through a pipe 25 and pumped through a pipe 27 into the space surrounded by the yarn on the warper-beam until it has reached the desired level in the jacket, whereupon the plug 39 is again screwed in; when the desired pressure is obtained, the supply through the first pipe 25 is cut off, and the dye is circulated from the jacket through a pipe 29 connected with the lower section thereof. Should the pressure drop or more dye be required, more can be drawn into the circulatory system from the vat 1. The flow can be reversed by operating suitable valves.
