HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 17, 1909.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910. Serial No. 528,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JERRY LESTER, of Alanson, in the county of Emmet and State of Michigan, and HIRAM W. HUMPHREY, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges and more particularly to strap hinges.
In strap hinges as heretofore constructed, it has been necessary to so cut and form the blanks that considerable waste of metal has been caused, particularly in the formation of those parts of the hinge which constitute the end bearings on the pintle.
The object of our present invention is to so construct a strap hinge that the blank therefor can be made of such shape as to economize material and permit a maximum number of blanks to be cut from a sheet of metal with a minimum amount of waste.
-VVith this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of con struction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are views of the blanks from which the respective members of the hinge are made. Fig. 3 is a face view of the completed hinge. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of thesame.
l, 2 represent the respective leaves of the hinge and 3 the hinge pin or pintle.
The leaf or member 1 of the hinge may be made substantially triangular in form and provided at its larger end with integral tongues 4 which are bent to form knuckles 5 for the accommodation of the hinge pin or pintle 3. The leaf or member 2 of the hinge may also be made substantially triangular in form and from the center of the larger end thereof, a tongue 6 projects and is bent to form a knuckle 7 disposed between the knuckles 5 of the hinge member 1 for the accommodation of the hinge pin or pintle 3. Adjacent to the side edges of the leaf or member 2 at the larger end thereof, the blank is cut on diagonal lines 8 at respective sides of the tongue 6 and thus ears 9 are formed. These ears are bent or twisted on diagonal lines 10 (Fig. 2) and are then bent slightly inwardly so that the free end-portions of said ears will be disposed substantially parallel with each other and these endportions of the ears are made with holes 12 for the passage of the hinge pintle.
In order to prevent the ears 9 from cutting the pin, the member 2 of the hinge will be locked to the pin and all the wear be thus caused to come upon the bearings of the member 1 of the hinge. This can be conveniently accomplished by indenting the knuckle 7 to form a teat 13 to engage the pin 3 and thus secure the member 2 of the hinge to said pin.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A hinge comprising two members and a hinge pin, said members provided with knuckles for said hinge pin, one of said members being cut at respective sides of its center near one end, forming ears and said ears being twisted and engaging the ends of the pintle.
2. A hinge comprising two members and a hinge pin, said members having knuckles engaging said hinge pin, one of said members being out diagonally at respective sides of its center near one end and inwardly spaced from its side edges, forming ears, and said ears being bent on diagonal lines at an angle to said diagonal cuts and having their free end portions substantially parallel with each other and engaging the ends of the hinge pin.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of subscribing witnesses.
