Description
f i f I l. E' L.' l 4 ,y lluittd tate @stent @titille GEORG-E ORETORS AND ENOS HOOVER, OF CLINTON COUNTY, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 97 ,362, Ia-ted November 30, 1869.
IMPROVED WEATHER-STRIP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name To all whom it may concern.:
4Bc it known that we, GEORGE W. Cnn'rons and ENOS HOOVER, citizens Ot the county of Clinton, in the State of Indiana, haverinv'ented a new and im- ]'lroved Weather-Strip; and we hereby declare that the following is afnll, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
(Our invent-ion relates to thatclass of door-strips which will close down tlghtlyupon the sill of the doorframe when the door is closed, and without exposing to view the `mechanical arrangement by which the same is accomplished, and consists in the arrangement of the devices as' hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use our invention, we will proceedto describe the manner in which we have carried it out.
B is a wooden or metallic plate, secured at the bottom of the door Oby means of screws o o.
A is a strip, to the lower edge of which is secured a double elastic, c c, as shown in Figure 4, and letter e, strip A, is made to rest evenly on the spring-harm, to which it is attached by the bar n.
This strip is also slotted at e. e', so as to pass freely up and down, and be held in place by the pins z z.
The bentlevers b b are secured at pins r o', which have their bearings inhibe frames b b. v
.lhe doubleheaded bar c a is provided wit-h slots u.' u', in which slide the bolts n n', and by which the bara a is held in place, and is allowed to slide, to a limited distance, backward and forward.
The end ot' this bar, toward the hinged side of the door, is made slightly longer than the strip A, so that when the door is closed,.this lengthened end Of the bar comes in contact with the plate or screw E, as shown in iig. 2, andibrces the bevelled heads of the bar against the bent levers b b, and causes the long arms of the levers'to bear upon and to force down the strip A, as shown invfig. 2.
When the door is again opened, or as soon as the bar c a is relieved of the pressure caused by its com ing in Contact with the plategyE," the spring-bar m, which has been bent-down', as shown in iig. 2, re'- sumes itsA position, as shown in tig. '1, and again raises the strip A, and forces the bar a a back toits position, as is also shown in iig. 1.
I) is a metallic coveringr for the mechanism above described, as shown in fig. 4, and is indicated by a dotted line in iig. 1. rlhis covering is secured by screws or nails x x to the door O, and above the met-al plate B.
What we claim as our invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, 'is- Y The weather-strip A, in combination with the spring tm, bar t a, bent levers b l), and covering D, all lconstructed and arranged substantially' as described.
f GEORGE XV. CRETORS.
ENOS HOOVER.
