Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a
i' citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of4 Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specitication. n
My invent-ion relates to improvements in roller side bearings for railway cars.
I-n the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of truck and body bolsters of a, railway car having roller side bearings embodyingmy invention. Fig. 2 is a central, vertical longitudinal section -of my improved side bearing taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the roller spacers.
In the drawing-A represents the truck bolster, A1 the body bolster of a railway car.
E is the base or lower bearing plate of my roller side bearing, the same being secured to the truck bolster A. It is provided with a reversely inclined or double cone-faced tread I; to receive the double cone or 0ppositely beveled anti-friction rollers C C, the tread 7) heilig curved about the king bolt as a center, as will be readily understood from Fig. 3 .o't' the drawing. The lower bearing plate B is further provided on each side of the tread Z) with upwardly projecting flanges or wings 721, provided at the upper portion with overhanging'shoulders or guides b2 for interengagement with the corresponding guides (l d1 of the upper or movable bearing plate D, which contacts with the body bolster A1 or to wearing plates A2. secured thereto. The upper or movable bearing plate D has 4depending sides (l2,
one of which is furnished with an integral guide (l for engagement vwith .the guide b2 of the lower bearing plate B, and the other of which is provided with a longitudinal -groove to receive a removable guide d1 which engages the corresponding guides b2 of the lower bearing plate B, thus removably securing the upper and lower bearing plates together, while permitting the upper bearing plate to reciprocate in respect to the lower one. To keep the anti-frictionv rollers C C properly spaced and to cause them and the upper bearing plate to automatically'- return to central or normal position after each swinging movement of the body and truck holsters about the king bolt in respectrto each other.. when the pressure-or weightV on the side bearing is again relieved, I provide the side bearing with a pair of spacers'F, each having a pair of studs f tov enter the hole 'Cl in the anti-friction roller C, one of these spacers F fitting on each side of the` rollers andl between the ends of the rollers and the upwardly projecting flanges or wings b1 of the lower bearing plate B. The upper bearing plate D also has central guides or shoulders d5 against which the upper portions of the spacers F may en; gage on their inner faces. The spacers F are provided with upwardly projecting shoulders or lugs f2 to engage the followers G which fit in a central chamber or recess D1 with which the upper bearin plate is provided, and abut against shoul ers d on said bearing plate. A coiled spring H is interposed between the followers G bearing at one end against. one follower' and at the opposite end against the other, the spring and the followers being supported in posi tion by a guide stein g which is preferably curved about the king bolt as a center, and
