ROLLER SIDE BEARING FOR CAFIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,292, dated May 9, 1905.
Application filed January 19, 1905. Serial No. 241,720.

Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR,-a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to roller side bearings for cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a roller side bearing of a strong, simple, eflicient, anddurable construction, in which the amount of movement of the upper and lower bearing-plates in respect to each other is not limited, so that the roller side bearing may be used upon street or other cars making sharp turns and in which at the same time the roller interposed between the upper and lower bearing-plates may be automatically kept in its central or proper relative position when the car after passing around a curve then passes onto a straight track.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result that is to say, it consists, in connection with the upper and lower bearing plates or blocks, one secured to the body-bolster and the other to the truck-bolster and each having a roller-track preferably curved about the king-bolt as a center, of a roller-bearing, preferably conical in form to correspond to the curvature of the upper and lower tracks, between which it is interposed, and a pair of loose collars turning on a spindle or hub projecting from the roller at each end thereof and each furnished with dowels or pins adapted to engage registering notches with which the top and bottom bearing-plates are provided.
Myinvention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown or described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a roller side bearing embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is aplau view showing the lower bearingplate and the rollerbearing thereon. 5
In said drawings, A represents the bodybolster, and A the truck-bolster, of a car to which my invention has been applied.
B is the lower bearing plate or block, se-
cured to the truck-bolster by bolts 7) and provided with a curved track or tread B for the roller C.
D is the upper bearing plate or block, secured to the body-bolster A by bolts (Z and provided with a track or tread I) for the roller C.
The roller C is preferably of conical form, and the tracks or treads B D of the bearingplates B D are preferably curved about the king-bolt as a center and slightly inclined to 5 correspond to the conical form of the roller C.
The roller C has projecting from each end a spindle F, preferably formed in a separate piece from the roller and upon which spindle there is mounted to rotate loosely therein a 7 pair of collars G G, which [it one on each side of the upper and lower bearing-plates B D, these collars serving as guides to keep the rollerbearing C in place between the upper and lower bearing-plates by their engagement with the upright side faces 7/ (Z of the upper and lower bearing-plates B D. Each of these loose collars G G is also provided on its inner face with a series of pins or dowels g, which engage upright registering notches or recesses 1)" d formed in the lower and upper bearing-plates B D on each side of their treads or tracks B D. The pins or dowels 9 may be integral with the collars G or in separate pieces therefrom, as may be desired, but are 5 preferably integral, as indicated in the draw ings. These pins or dowels are preferably four in number on each of the loose collars G. The spindle or shaft F, upon which each of the collars G loosely turns, is preferably 9 formed in a separate piece from the roller C l upper and lower bearing-plates, substantially and furnished with a head f on one end and a nut f on the other end, and thus serves to connect the collars G to the roller C or rotatably secure the same thereon.
I claim 1. In a roller side bearing for cars, the combination with upper and lower bearing-plates, of a roller interposed between the same, a pair of collars rotatably mounted on said roller at each end thereof and fitting and engaging one on each side of said upper and lower bearingplates, and provided with registering pins or dowels on their inner faces engaging registering notches with which the upper and lower bearing-plates are provided, substantially as specified.
2. In a roller side bearing for cars, the combination with upper and lower bearing-plates having curved tracks or treads for a roller and provided with registering notches or recesses on each side of said curved track or tread, of a roller interposed between said upper and lower bearing-plates, and loose collars rotatably mounted at each end of said roller and provided with registering dowels or projections on their inner faces and engaging said registering notches or recesses in the as specified.
3. In a roller side bearing for cars, the combination with upper and lower bearing-plates having curved tracks or treads for a roller and provided with registering notches or recesses on each side of said curved track or tread, of a roller interposed between said upper and lower bearing-plates, loose collars rotatably mounted at each end of said roller and provided with registering dowels or projections on their inner faces and engaging said registering notches or recesses in the upper and lower bearing-plates, and a spindle extending through said collars and said roller, substantially as specified.
4. In a roller side bearing, the combination with upper and lower bearing-plates, of an interposed roller, collars mounted to rotate on said roller at each end thereof, and interengaging registering devices on said collars of said rollers and said bearing-plates, substantially as specified.
